Mangalore, Nov 23: “Widowhood is motherhood in adversity, a story of triumph.  When the spouse goes, you think the sky has fallen.  But to rise like the phoenix and to succeed in life, requires a lot of courage.  Difficult situations in life make a human being very tough”, said Michael Saldanha, retired judge, Karnataka High Court.

He was welcoming the audience assembled at the St Aloysius High School Hall in the city for the ‘Catholic Association of South Kanara Reunion-2009’, in his capacity as its president, held on Sunday November 22.

The special theme for this year’s reunion was the honouring of those members of the community who were widowed at the age of 40 or earlier and had to single-handedly bring up and care for their children.

Altogether, 77 women and a man were honoured by Justice Saldanha on the occasion.  It was a celebration of the strength of women.

Dr Derek Lobo, retired doctor, who served with the World Health Organization for several decades, raised the toast to the widows and the lone widower on behalf of all people and said, “This is one very significant, extraordinary, and privileged toast I have ever raised in my life.  If every mother is an institution, you are extraordinary institutions.  You have given the gift of your life to your children and the community.  This is celebration and appreciation of your continued work. We salute you for being a role model to our community".

Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza, who joined the celebrations halfway through, praised the efforts of CASK.  “No one has ever dreamt of honouring the widows so far and this is indeed a praiseworthy deed by CASK”, he said.

Earlier in the day, Fr Ronnie Prabhu, director, Fatima Retreat House, offered mass along with other priests at the St Aloysius Chapel.  He gave a profound, touching, homily on the occasion.

Sabrina was the master of ceremony.  Skits were enacted and Patma Melodies entertained the audience with some scintillating numbers.

During last year's reunion, married couples who had been wed 50 years or more were felicitated.

REALLY IT IS A HEART FEELING EVENT WHICH CASK HAS ORGANISED. WIDOW IS HAVING NO DIFFERENCE IN TREATING AS A MOTHER BECAUSE SHE IS A MOTHER AND AND SHOULD BE RESPECTED IN THE COMMUNITY AS A MOTHER. NO ONE CAN IMAGINE THE FEELINGS OF A WIDOW AND HOW SHE STRUGGLES IN SOCIETY TO BRING UP HER CHILDREN ALL ALONE . LET US SPECIALLY REMEMBER ALL THE WIDOWS ALL OVER THE WORLD AND ONCE IN A WHILE WE SHOULD COME UP WITH SUCH EVENTS WHICH WILL TURN THEIR SORROWS INTO HAPPINESS. ALL WIDOWS WILL BE IN MY PRAYERS TODAY.

I happened to know of this reunion through none other but my own mother. I was indeed very inquisitive as my mother texted me from India to check on Daijidubai. Indeed CASK has done a extremely touching reunion. My mother too was widowed early and she single handedly brought us three kids up, with sheer perseverence in an age and time when honesty and perseverence did not count.

I am honored to say My mother "IRENE MONICA VAZ" was one among the 77 very important people who were honored by CASK. Dr Derek Lobo, I send you my best wishes and regards for all that you have done. None ever even in time realised the necessity to do such a honorable reunion for people lost in time. I would also take this opportunity to remember the other people whose spouses had passed away for all who werent able to make it to this reunion. May God bless Dr. Derek Lobo and his team for their sincere unselfish efforts. Thank you!

Great job, I really appreciate the organizers & wish them good luck for the future, request them to continue such good work. In our society, its really pity to see the Widow's are facing several problems. No body understands their difficulties in life with out life partner, how they look after their children. Even some villages Widows are ill-treated. Anyway please every one in this world should understand each other & help each other selflessly with respect.

Nice and thoughtful gesture on behalf of CASK to honour widows at the Annual reunion ceremony. In the Western world female widows always have an opportunity to get to know the male widows and date each other in order to explore any possibilities for a possible matrimonial encounter. Such marriages also have various tax shelters in the Western world and also economic benefits.

Situation in India also will change eventually as it is always preferably for suitable female widows to interact with suitable male widows for achieving a mutual objective. Its all part of the globalization influence that will spread all over the world.
