Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 22: The first confirmed coronavirus case has been reported in Mangaluru.

Addressing a press meet here on Sunday March 22, deputy commissioner Sindhu Rupesh said, "The first coronavirus positive case has been confirmed in Dakshina Kannada. The patient is a native of Bhatkal, and is aged 22 years.

"He came from Dubai by SpiceJet flight at 5.30 pm on March 19. When he was screened at Mangaluru International Aiport, he was found to be symptomatic, and was immediately rushed to the isolation ward of Wenlock hospital. We collected his swab the same day and it reached the lab on March 20.

"We received the report today and it has turned out positive," she added.

"The contacts in this case are the passengers in the SpiceJet flight. As many as 165 passengers were on the flight with him, and we are contacting them," she said.

A total of 2,139 people from the district who passed through Mangaluru airport are currently in home quarantine. Ten have completed 28 days of home quarantine period, and 27 are currently quarantined in ESI hospital. Five coronavirus suspects are under observation.

Six new coronavirus positive cases were confirmed in Karnataka on Sunday, raising the total to 26.

The state government has postponed all exams as well as elections until further orders.

The government has also decided to thermal screen domestic passengers as well at the airports where only international passengers were being screened till now.

Agree - it's a laborious task. People must cooperate.
Or else we could see many fatalities like in Italy & Iran .

I assume these Indians were on a visit visa in the UAE and when you are on a visit visa, you are NOT covered under any insurance and hence availing healthcare here in the UAE becomes very expensive. To avoid this, I think these travelers are trying to head back to India ASAP even with high fever so that they can avail the required treatment in India. What the government in the UAE should do is ask expats/visit visa holders to come forward even without any insurance and report so that they can be given the required treatment. The UAE government is expat friendly and this I know because I live here. I think there need to be clear guidelines so that people don't panic and run back to their countries giving the disease to 100 more people. Also, there may definitely be some stupid people who just want to travel to India at this time whatsoever! I strongly believe that the international flights should come to a complete standstill. Why not do it for at least a month. We may incur enormous losses but the entire world is losing not just India!

Most of the cornovirus cases are those who come from abroad. Otherwise we would have been safe. So better to test the travellers first who are coming from abroad instead panicking here afterwards. prevention is better than cure.

He has traveled with 165 passengers, crew, etc..… these 165 passengers have gone to 165 families, might have met relatives, neighbors, friends etc…
There is a dire need of lock-down for a longer period as in many cases symptoms are not visible for many days.

This is certainly a Catch 22 situation !!! This pandemic curse, has been afflicted by infected, travellers, who deliberately do not reveal their afflictions n hence transmit this horrible disease to unsuspecting victims !!!! One carrier can transmit to 10 healthy people... ten can forward to hundred... hundred give this curse to thousands and the chain to lakhs and millions !!.Humans can be wiped out in a matter of weeks. Hope n pray that we are responsible and will arrest this pandemic from being a catastrophic calamity !!!!!

Here who ever entered, with infected person, all are quarantined for 14 days , and daily tests were conducted. The signs of infection will not be visible for some days. It is better to Quarantine all passengers and their families now and whom they meet for 14 days at home, even if they are fit. This is called breaking of chain from further spreading the disease.

Now that Coronavirus is well and truly here at our doorstep,it is ABSOLUTELY VITAL that atleast now we take social distancing seriously, especially for the next 15-20 days.
That means , for example, no going to to meet relatives, or socialising with neighbours or group walks even within building premises.
Make sure your children stay home at all times, even if that drives you nuts!
Give your domestic help/driver/office staff paid leave for the next fortnight-they’re the ones likely to be hit the hardest because of Covid 19.
Avoid going to the physician ( and other doctors) unless it’s an emergency- they’re likely to be swamped with potential Coronavirus cases shortly .
Wash your hands with warm water and soap often.
Check on older relatives over the phone.
Stock up on essentials but do not hoard or give in to panic buying.
Maintain 1-metre distance between you and the next person whenever you go out.
All the best; stay safe, Mangalore!

The authorities have identified the patient symptoms and straight away took him to wenlock isolation. We need to appreciate the authorities and health worker for this. It would have been a disaster if he was let off

It is advisable for authorities to test the travellers before leaving thier original place otherwise they will be infecting all people and the transport media whom they come into contact throughout thier journey and then after reaching thier destination people at destination. Whole world cooperation is anticipated during this time.

This is an emotional issue also. Look at the plight of parents of Indian students in China. Italy ,China ,Iran etc. could not look after the patients of their own country. Then where is the question of looking after the patients of other countries. So if they fall sick they would 8530 not get proper food and medicine. How desperately they wanted to return India.Govt did a good thing by bringing them back..

Why do not you screen and isolate/quarantine all the passengers who came from Dubai on 19th March till you get the result.
Who ever comes and or evacuate from the infected countries, please do not let them free until and unless result out.
