Mangaluru, Apr 1: Compared to Tuesday morning when people were found to have queued up in front of provision stores as well as fruits and vegetable shops, the rush has been markedly less on Wednesday, April 1. As only a handful people were waiting when the shops opened at 7 am today, there was no problem in maintaining social distance and handling the crowd.

After three days of total lockdown, shops had opened yesterday at 6 am. The people, who were waiting to buy many things, had been seen to be in a hurry to make purchases. Perhaps a few wanted to stock up things, in the expectation that total lockdown might be clamped again.

The people are relaxed today as they find that most of the items they need are available and there is time till 12 pm to make purchases. They also seem to have taken respite from the knowledge that shops would be open every day henceforth. There also seems to a marked decrease in the unnecessary movement of vehicles on the city roads today.

Both the movement of people and situation at Mallikatte, Kadri area, Bijai Kapikad, Urwa Store, Mannagudde, car street etc have improved a lot.

Keeping the markets closed for 3 days was not a wise decision . What can you expect from people on the 4th day? It is practical and sensible to keep shopping for essential items open everyday. Automatically there will not be any rush and people are forced to follow social distancing.

Our administration must ask vegetables vendors to spread in different areas of Mangalore city , so automatically the buyers will by from their areas only and the rush can be controlled easily. Now most of the people rushing to central market area.

If these hours were maintained as communicated from the very start the overcrowding would never have happened.

    See ...
    Automatic Social Distancing !!!
Sharper brains would have thought of this in ' Relatively ' safe areas like ours !
I stress on the word ' Relatively ' with special reference to Mangaluru only.
All the rush, clamour could have been limited by not over panicking .
All said a good job done.
Three cheers to us Msngaloreans ...Think all of us have emerged better with lock down lessons.

I agree. But if the administration had not locked down for 3 days, for every bit of news, this would not have happened on 4th day.

They need to ensure and work with the psychology of the masses. If things are scarce, hoarding will happen. If only 9hrs of shopping in 4 days is allowed, compared to 20+ hrs over 4 days, people will be calmer, sensible. Always create rules, thinking most people will be irrational, since thats how humans work in times of stress.

Hope better sense prevails, they keep these timings on all days, maybe extend till 5-6pm.

Also please start asking people to wear homemade masks (not the N95 or other medical use masks), look at countries like Japan, SK, HK, Taiwan, Czeck where wearing masks has reduced the spread. Mask is one more tool to reduce spread, and enforce distancing.
