Mangalore, Dec 6: The historically popular Kadri Kambala, being held in the name of Lord Kadri Manjunatha, was held on Sunday, December 06 in the city, with the participation of dozens of buffalo pairs. The Kadri Kambala, which is the first Kambala to be held in the undivided Dakshina Kannada district, has provided a grand beginning for the traditional buffalo race events that are set to be held in the two districts, during this season.
The Kambala began with the traditional ritual of honouring the buffaloes by the family head of Kadri Kambala Guttu, in the presence of the Swamiji of Kadri Sri Yogiswara Mutt, Mahantharasa Rajayogi Sandyanathji.
The buffalo race began at noon, with the participation of buffalo pairs from the district and surrounding regions. The race has several sections for competitions, based on the capacity of the pairs. A single, large-sized paddy field has been divided in to two parts, which are known with the names, Macchendranatha Kere and Gorakshanatha Kere.
The owners of the winning pairs were honoured by presenting them with the gold medal and mementos.
Prior to the buffello race, Kesaru Gadde Ota (running in slushy field), Tug-of-war and Tappangai competitions were held for different age groups at the same paddy field.
As per the belief handed over since generations, an un-written rule that no Kambalas should be held in Tulunadu before Kadri Kambala, is being followed strictly. Accordingly, Kadri Kambala happens to be the first Kambala of the season here.
It is said that Kadri Kambala was in existence even prior to the rule of the Alupa kings. But then, it was known as 'Arasu Kambala', as it was held under the patronage of kings. As times passed, it came to be known as 'Devara Kambala' and now it is commonly called as Kadri Kambala.
The tradition of conducting this Kambala is being carried further by family of Kadri Kambala Guttu, Late Balakrishna Shetty, with the support of several organizations and by forming a separate committee for looking after the Kambala affairs.
A large crowd had gathered to witness the beautiful pairs of buffalos, their skillful handlers, competitions organized on the occasion, etc.
