Mangalore: ‘Kadala Parba’ Revives Traditional Beach Games

Mangalore, Dec 6: Thousands of people witnessed a special event ‘Kadala Baritha Gobbulu’ (Kadala Parba), showcasing the traditional games played on the seashore, held at Chitrapura beach on Sunday December 6.
It was organized by the Mogaveera Yuva Vedike, ahead of the World Tulu Convention.
The event was inaugurated by Dr D Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Dharmastala and honorary president of the Convention by offering milk to the sea.
A boat race, a tug-of-war in the sea for men and women, a swimming competition, as well as contests in using the net for fishing, weaving of fishing nets, and walking with a head load, were organized as part of the programme.
Along with the competitions, a fight on the sea was organized to commemorate the struggle of legendary Tulunadu ruler Rani Abbakka against British rule.
Popular Tulu singer Mime Ramdas and his team performed several Tulu songs during the function. Students of Sri Dharmastala Manjunatheswara Law College presented a programme depicting Tulu culture.
The traditional style of fishing was demonstrated and seafood cuisine was on sale and for exhibition in several stalls along the seashore.
The function concluded with a prize distribution programme in the evening. Dr Heggade, Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament, and office-bearers of Mogaveera Yuva Vedike were present.
