Mangalore, Dec 8: A patient with liver cirrhosis and a large tumour in the liver, had been referred to Unity Hospital in the city for treatment. The patient was found to be not fit for surgery.
A team of doctors led by onco-surgeon, Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, and his team comprising Dr Dr Krishna Prasad, Dr Karthik Uchila, Dr Devdas Acharya and Dr Rajkumar, decided on a novel approach known as hepatic chemo embolisation, using advanced cathlab of Unity Hospital. In this procedure, anti-cancer drugs were directly delivered to the cancer found in the liver. This advanced technology, which is mainly used for stenting in the case of heart attack treatments, was made use of in the case of this patient, for the first time in the city.
This procedure is not only safe, but very effective, as the healthy tissues and organs are spared from the side-affects of the drugs, therby helping to prolong the life-span of the patient and sometimes, even curing the disease. The patient can be sent home within a day after the procedure.
