Mangaluru: Police seize 167 vehicles in city for lockdown violation

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Apr 12: The police department, noticing that many are habituated to flagrant violation of lockdown rules and a number of vehicles are unnecessarily being brought on the road for purposes other than procuring provisions and essentials, had issued stern warning that violators would not be spared. Now they have begun to strictly enforce the lockdown norms, sensing that crowding of roads and other places increases risk of communicating coronavirus infection.

As the system of delivering things to the doorsteps of the people has been put in place by the district administration within the city, the police see that vehicles are being taken out without any concrete reason.

As many as 167 vehicles which were found to be moving around in violation of lockdown rules were taken into custody by the city police on Saturday. Cases have been registered against them.

Similar operation has been launched in various parts of the district, and the police, after stopping the vehicles and scrutinising the justification for bringing the vehicles out, have been registering cases against people who fail to offer convincing reasons. The vehicles so seized include cars, two-wheelers, auto rickshaw and others.

The operation was conducted under the directions of city police commissioner, Dr P S Harsha, by deputy commissioner of police, Laxmi Ganesh, and assistant commissioner of police, Manjunath Shetty.

Similarly, 178 vehicles found to be flouting rules were confiscated by the police on Friday.

One thing is for sure. The people who disagree to the penalties being imposed or suggested in this article, are the ones who are either breaking the law themselves with impunity or related to people who are breaking it.

Suspending licence is not enough, as these guys will drive without licence and it will be difficult to keep track. Confiscate vehicles for a year and if these people have a second vehicle confiscate that as well. Additionally impose a hefty fine in excess of Rs 25K per vehicle. This money can be used towards the Coronavirus relief fund. In addition impose community service for one to 2 weeks like sweeping roads, garbage collection etc. If these penalties are imposed these senseless guys will not break the law for 6 generations. The chalta hai virus is more dangerous and has to be put an end to immediately.

My suggestion to Mangalore Traffic Police is that, they must put seal on the fore head of violators like quarantine seal, and it will be for atleast 15 days on their forehead. If they violate again Traffic Police can catch them easily. And at the same time gun type temperature reading instruments they must carry and check the temperature also. If they start checking temperature, most will avoid coming out. I hope this suggestion will help.

Allow petrol and diesel only for ambulance and grocery supplier. Ban petrol and diesel partially instead of seizing the vehicle.
