Karnataka to decide on liquor sale during extended lockdown as per central guidelines

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Apr 14: Chief minister (CM) of Karnataka B S Yediyurappa, who welcomed the central government's decision to extend the lockdown period till May 3, indicated that tougher measures would be undertaken in the state in the coming days to regulate spread of coronavirus. He was addressing a press meet here at his home office, 'Krishna', on Tuesday April 14.

"The situation in the state will be closely monitored till April 20. On the basis of the guidelines the Prime Minister (PM) will issue tomorrow, we will hold discussions with officials and decide the nature of lockdown implementation," he said. While thanking the people for their cooperation so far, he said that in case of violation of rules, tighter measures would be enforced. About sale of liquor during this period too he said a decision would be taken depending on the guidelines being given by the PM tomorrow.

It is learnt that the Association of Liquor Shop Owners has approached the CM with a request to allow sale of liquor at least for a couple of hours every day. They drew the attention of the CM towards increased incidents of suicide by liquor addicts, thefts from wine stores etc and sought permission to sell liquor to control this situation. They promised to maintain social distance during liquor sale and also pointed out that expiry dates of liquor are coming near in some cases and their transportation is withheld as only provisions and vegetables are allowed to move on the road. They said they will face huge loss if the situation continues.

In response to the request, state chief secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar, said that further decision will be taken as per the central government guidelines.

I feel people will have a good time being at home if they provide home delivery for liquor. Ppl should not step out of they give it to them door step. here govt can give a home delivery strategy. Govt should try selling it see the reaction for a week n then decide. Let's not assume things can go wrong if they start selling it. N specially not include the suggestion of non drinks bcoz they always have a bad thought about ppl who drink.

I am sure all reviews are totally different from one perspective to another ...but please think on the national interest....
I just wish to your kind notice that our country is still underdeveloped and the economy is hitting hard and recession is fast approaching and the Karnataka States Revenue from alcohol Rs 15,332 crore in 2017 and In the year 2019-20, the average revenue collected per month was Rs 1,800 crore.

According to the current budget the government was expecting to collect a revenue of Rs 22,700 crore but exceeded the target by Rs 450 crore. In the year 2019-20, the average revenue collected per month was Rs 1,800 crore. According to the current budget the government was expecting to collect a revenue of Rs 22,700 crore but exceeded the target by Rs 450 crore.

however, on an average Indian population only spends around 20 to 30 rupees per head .... in a situation like a lockdown ...people are expected to stay at home and the alcohol is just like yet another grocery ....and the economy is depending on regular rotation or the cycle of business...people may talk but ultimately the taxes keep the economy in trend......

dear friends ...many people behind the process of preparation of alcohol and as you are aware that many companies are removing employees since there is no work and no revenue is generating in the industries ....The state requires development and progress... I welcome those who do not consume alcohol...on the same stretch an industry should not be driven to dry state of affairs...
liquor sales necessary for state revenue.....and moreso...state has committed to the interest of citizens and restriction on following the measures for safety is inevitable whether it is COVID -19 or any other issue of 2020.....there should be no problem is the distribution of brewer

Bad decision by central govt. No plan on how to handle once lock down is over. Just out of fear they announced lock down. Rich wants to be safe so they don't care how the poor suffers. Will the govt. pay the rent for people staying outside of their homes? What will the common people do once they lose their jobs? The death rate will be higher once lock down is lifted.

Do you think stop selling liquor will solve all the family problems????
No, never... In fact as per the latest reports, domestic violence has increased ever since the lockdown, a time when alcohol is not available, isn't that contradicting?

And when you prohibit something, then you will have the urge to get it, this is a basic human behavior.
I'll tell you my case, I'm social drinker, the last I took alcohol was in the new years eve, but when the liquor sales paused, my instinct was to get one even though I didn't need it but just wanted it in my stock, basic instinct!!!

People those who are crying over a complete ban of alcohol, you are in nuts, you don't understand what is social drinking and alcoholism. Nothing in this world is good if you over consume, let it be the rice, wheat or so called 'amrit' (elixir) can harm your life.
Apart from that, if you completely ban alcohol, the alcoholics will turn toward drugs, ganja etc... and some will start distilling their own, spurious alcohol etc... they and their family has no escape!!!
Then, think about the big hole that is making in our economy when alcohol is prohibited, don't blindly criticize everything you see and don't try to gauge every one with the same scale.

So, my dear friends, my advise to you all who are crying for alcohol ban, if you don't want you just keep quite, then go back to your home, treat the person at your home who is alcoholic, not the entire society need to suffer the mistake of a small percentage!!!

Why State Govt of Karnataka has to wait & follow centers guidelines for anything to everything?? Does n state Govt of Karnataka have no significance ?? I see other states taking their calls quite individually, keeping national governmet guidelines in mind.. Then y not Karnataka??
CM should annonce opening of Liquor shops for few hours.. As it is Karnataka is running out of revenue... Also CM should understand that Bangluru is not the only place/district in Karnataka, there are other districts too.. There's no need to take all decisions just looking at situations in bangluru... There are lots of districts in Karnataka doing well with COVID19 so consider that...

It is a tragedy in itself that most people do not know the difference between alcoholism and social drinking. Without knowing what it is, people are coming to conclusions and asking not to open the wine stores. This is utter nonsense. In this day i am sure drinking is not a taboo anymore. So kindly understand first and then decide what needs to be done. I am sure afyer assurances from the liquir vendirs, there definitely will be social distancing maintained. Simply do not sell liquor to people who dont follow guidelines. The military canteens are ooen and selling liquor. Two states have already approved selling liquor. So why differentiate between people of the same country. Simply foolish. Dont make a halla about people drinking. Those who dont want to drink, stay away from the subject. You dont understand. If you have an alcoholic at home, please take them to deaddiction centers. Because they need counseling and medicines rather than your abuses.

Few years back, our head of the families used to drink till their nose...and taking debts... Wives were forced to go to gulf countries as house maids and had to work till 12/1 midnight...and to repay the debts. Those who were unable to go abroad learnt to drink along with the husband... Children were/are growing helplessly without anyone's support, no clothes no food... ..curse on this liquor...

Thats means government wants to earn by destroying the income of low middle class families and poor families. Govt. wants to derive money anyhow through the sale of liquor isnt it? Instead of fighting, hitting, getting bankrupt by selling house, gold, property better to die in a short span through virus. Let high medium class and rich families Live. These high class people never spend as much as on liquor, nor sell their properties or valuables like low medium and poor families...!!! Just think how many total disagrees? Instead of ready spending money on this, why cant they donate, help and join their hands with the medical team through government in finding out the medicine for corona? Govt coffers r empty; unplanned demo and GST not the economy from out of the blue and put the country in a big economic shock from which no business could recover; almost all businesses were reeling under recession since last 4-5 months; now this CORONA has hit the last nail in the coffin! BTW, not a single paisa of black money was received from Swiss banks; big time fraudsters & crooks escaped to date havens with large amounts of looted booty of innocent investors; still large scale manipulation going on in stock mkts with the watchdogs looking the other way! Fraudsters & rogue bankers who looted 1000s of crores of innocent investors are out on bail! Most indian promoted entities window dress accounts books in collusion with crook auditors & Jack up share prices only to trap innocent investors! Jet Air was allowed bookings when it was clear it will not survive thereby booking amount of 5000+ crores of travellers went down the drain!!

From Where did u learn about psychology of alcohol withdrawal.?? Giving up stupid Gyan... Current scenario with alcoholics is called "Cold Turkey " & Not withdrawal symptoms disappeared...
Cravings for alcohol would not go away, it needs to be treated with opioid blockers, on other hand imbalance of neurotransmitters need to treated with anti depressants, which has its own side effects too so needs to manage those side effects with medications too...
And the most importantly, such therapies do not work for everyone.. Also this kinda treatment centers is not available in multiple areas, limited centers cannot handle all addicts, & govt. is not actually doing anything regarding it apart from just tweeting "to contact de addiction center regardsless of knowing the nos. & limitations of de addiction centers in their own state."
Think, understand and Educate ur self before commenting on social issues...

Directly/Indirectly many volunteers are involved to control the situation. They are on road...managing now and than. Doctors..nurses..medical team are never visited there home from long. Very rare and meet there family members from far. Are they are not human-beings. In so critical period they are after to save the people..on risk. Somewhat situation is in control not accelerating much as in other countries. It's due to these volunteers only..we are safe. Liquor lobby wants to mint money by pressurising goverment. Can we not sacrifice liquor for two month's period for sake of those people who are working for us day and night. Are we want to enjoy the moment at this hour..when death occurs..not in india but worldwide. It means we are selfish character.
