Mangaluru: Ragpickers blame civic officials for miserable living conditions amid lockdown

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Apr 15: A group of ragpickers residing at Pachanady colony have accused corporators and MLAs of turning a deaf ear to their grievances.

As many as over 10 families, who everyday pick scrap and rags, spend their lives living in tents. The community alleged that neither government officials nor ministers visited their colony to address their problem. Reportedly, for several years now, the people in the colony have been facing water problems, housing challenges among many others.

Speaking to Daijiworld. one of the colony residents, Janaki said, "We have been denied all the facilities available from the government. Neither the corporator nor MLA visited our colony to solve our problems. We feel completely neglected. We earn by collecting scrap. Amid this lockdown, we have not even received proper ration. Recently, one packet of buns was provided to us. We have also been facing water problems since the authorities have disconnected water connection. However, when corporators seek votes, they visit us and promise to fulfill all our demands. Unfortunately, once the elections are done, they do not even bother about us."

Another resident Yashoda said, "Some organisations have provided us with food kits and other products, but we have not received any aid from the corporator."

Corporator Sangeetha R Nayak said, "A renowned bakery from our ward has assured to provide buns after we give them the required ingredients. They have agreed to bake it for free and we will later distribute them to the underprivileged in my ward. Plastic for Change India Foundation has given food kits which have 15 kg rice and other essentials like dal, sugar, tea powder, soap, oil, sambar powder, sanitary napkins and many other products. Meanwhile, the organisation Hasiru Dala, which works to provide a better life for ragpickers has provided 25 kg rice.

"While the allegation of disconnecting water connection is false, I have received complaints from the civic workers residing on the other side of the colony. When inspection was conducted, I found that the rag-picking workers had taken water connection from the main pipeline. Following this, we took action and stopped the water supply," said Nayak.

I had seen the pictures of two sitting MLA's on the motor bikes street enforcing the lock down. I am not sure their bikes can reach unpaved roads leading to the rag-pickers colony.

Several years back Mangalore is picked for 'Smart city'. Today condition of these unofficial civic cleaners is hurting.

Why not these ready resources of Manpower can be converted into good use on contact basis and help the city from 'Dengu, Malaria and now Corona virus threat?

I felt pity looking at the pictures and the fate of these ragpickers. They have clearly blamed the civic officials for their plight and conditions. What are they doing to help these poor ragpickers. They might have come from any state or villages but it is deplorable to see them living and working in such conditions. This is one way of spreading any disease of nay kind. Please do something for them soon.

    I feel sorry for them...
These people do not look like Mangaloreans by origin they would have moved few years back.. I saw tents near Kadri park too, is it legal to go and put on tent where wer they find space??? And I would definitely not call it as Colony rather call it a ghetto or slum.. and coming to tax, there are taxes for water I believe there are lot of poor people who pay taxes on utility, I don't think thats the case with these people.. but thats ok because these look very poor.. I guess these people move continuously hence it's difficult to get stability...
Sorry to see too many slums being created in Mangalore, hope they are given a decent place..

Rag pickers community is helping solid waste management. They collect the reusable items like Plastics, bottles, card board boxes and these items then recycled. I n dirctly they are saving our earth and nature. Only the main problem is there is no support from govt. Govt. Should provide housing, education for children.

Slums get created because of these parasitic people. The government has so many schemes for the poor. We the middle class are slogging paying tax to look after these people. Please stop the minute a slum is beginning to take shape. Let them work and earn their bread. There is shortage of low category workers .

Don't think about vote bank. Help them come up in life. Let their children go to school so that next generation doesn't become rag pickers.

Foremost, I want to ask : why are these people picking rags ? Were they appointed to do it ? Appointed by who ? Central government ? State government ? Now, what are they doing with the rags they picked ? Handing over to some government agency , or sell it to make a living ? Instead, can't they do a job that pays them a decent wage ?

If they are thinking that the authorities should look after them, they are a burden on the society. Of course except during the lock-down period. Go people, find a job. Migrants come here to find work, why can't you ? So that you don't have to plead for mercy, but you can live a life of dignity.

The food ration has not reached the migrant labourers and others who dont have the ration card. The officials who are distributing the ration with out any survey and not reaching the needy. They are doing this for showups and selfies. None of our officials and politians are concerned about this.

Corporation staff doing a lot of policing job, trying to encourage social distancing. The city corporation got a once in lifetime opportunity to clean the city. The roads can be cleaned by removing all the sand and mud on the roads. The city can be even washed. There is so much of building debris thrown on roads all this can be removed. So many places the pedestrian crossing (zebra crossing ) can be painted.

Although I pity them, but to be honest all will complain and blame the authorities when given a chance. They have got buns, food kit and ration. Regarding water supply, it was cut because illegally they have taken connection. Govt. cant give everything...saving for hard times should be cultivated so as to not face such sithuations.

The plight of rag pickers is similar to migrant workers and the poor, here the civic authority is to be blamed.Movement of people between countries and between states within the country is in the central domain and not states. An aircraft was sent to get back students from Wuhan to Kerala and the first Corona positive case was imported into our country, many Indian and foreign nationals flew in, they were not even quarantined only temperature guns, which are highly unreliable and really meant for industrial use were utilized. Delegates including foreigners attended a convention in Delhi, were the immigration authorities in slumber? Poor migrants were not provided with food or cash and they were forced to walk home, hundreds of kilometers. Why the difference in the treatment meted to the poor, are they not deshvasis? Are they not our brothers and sisters (Bhaio aur Beheno). Those who have never stood in a queue or stepped our of their house to buy milk or veggies will never understand this.Virus does not differentiate between rich and poor, why do we?
