Vittal, Dec 17: District in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar on Thursday December 17, visited the site where an explosion occurred at an illegal crackers manufacturing unit in Karopadi in Kanyana.
He expressed his suspicions about the unit said that only a detailed investigation can reveal the truth.
Palemar said, “The failure of various departments including the police is the reason such units spring up. As the area borders Karnataka and Kerala, the police should have watched the activities of the strangers”.
The minister interrogated the locals about the incident and past happenings at the location. Several citizens alleged that it is an illegal unit and something else was going on there under the guise of manufacturing crackers.
Palemar assured the public that a thorough investigation of the matter would be undertaken and spoke to panchayat officials over his cell phone from the spot.
He criticized them for their negligence as to the illegal construction and also reprimanded the electricity department officials for their lack of vigilance regarding the illegal connection provided to the units.
Locals alleged that the police department was hand in glove with the owners of the explosives manufacturing unit as, after the explosion, they carted away several loads of materials soon after the police left.
They alleged that the police stationed at the site were recalled to facilitate the culprits to smuggle away materials from the unit.
Some of the residents said that the unit was functioning furtively and the locals were not allowed on the land.
They claimed that there were 30-50 workers engaged in the unit of whom many were security guards. As per their observation, all of the workers were from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, who were not in contact with the locals or avoided contact.
Palemar told the people gathered there that if they had only filed a complaint against the unit with the police or any other departments, this incident might have been averted.
Superintendent of police Dr A S Rao also visited the spot. He has formed a new team to investigate the incident.
Sources in the police department said that officials from the explosives department will be visiting the spot shortly to examine the unit.
