After woman's death, Bantwal areas sealed down, over 20 including doctor quarantined

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal

Bantwal, Apr 19: Following the death of a 50-year-old woman from Bantwal Kasba here on Sunday April 19 due to coronavirus, the district administration intensified measures to curb the spread of the virus by completing sealing down the area surrounding her residence.

The woman, who became the first victim of coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada, had developed respiratory issues on Saturday April 18 and was taken to Bantwal taluk hospital. She was then brought to Wenlock hospital, which being a government-run hospital, is the sole facility in the district for coronavirus treatment. Her swabs were collected and sent for testing, but she passed away on Sunday morning even before the report was out.

Health workers in Bantwal

The report which was received in the afternoon confirmed that she had contracted coronavirus.

The woman's close family members have been placed under quarantine. Their samples were also collected and sent for testing.

Soon after the woman's death, the administration sealed down the area surrounding her residence, for a radius of 3 km.

The main town area has also been completely sealed.

The administration has strictly sealed down everything within 100 metres of the woman's house. Areas in the radius of 500 metres are being closely monitored.

Sajipanadu and Thumbe in Bantwal, Janata colony in Karaya of Beltangady, Smart planet apartment in Thokkottu, Sampya Mane in Puttur, Uppinangady in Puttur and Ajjavara in Sullia have already been declared coronavirus containment zones in the district.

Doctor quarantined

It is also learnt that a doctor who examined the deceased woman has also been quarantined.

The doctor, who runs a private clinic in Bantwal, had examined the woman five days ago, it is learnt.

The district administration is currently trying to trace the travel history of the woman.

Sources said that over 20 persons who were in contact with the deceased woman have been quarantined. These include the woman's neighbours.

A group of health officials brought the people to Mangaluru to be quarantined.

The police are trying to trace another 10 persons who were in contact with the woman.

Mr Rahul Gandhi and others have said many times: increase testing!

The testing will uncover the asymptomatic carriers of the virus.

It is the testing that can save a large number of people. Testing at a massive scale was an absolute need, but India ignored it.

The Government could have used it scientists and manufacturing to come up with testing devices at a massive scale in a matter of a week's time. Just like the Chinese built massive hospitals in 10 days' time.

Instead the Government was busy entertaining Trump - to inaugurate the WORLD'S LARGEST cricket stadium in Gujarat...

... and our wise people laughed at Mr Gandhi's statements. Even on this forum.

India will pay a huge price for ignoring Mr Gandhi's advice.

Yes, he has already told so. Anyone can say anything. I would say.. Govt should distribute Rs.10,000 to everyone, Govt should build 1000 hospitals in the next 10 days, Govt should reduce the petrol prices by Rs.20, Govt should not levy any GST, Income Tax should be reduced by Rs,100000, All the loans from the small business should be written off. Do you need more I can state many such things...
The person doesn't speak sense, doesn't know how to speak, copy the text given by his thinktank in the twitter and the list goes on. And the surprising thing is there are people who are blind followers!!

It's a kind request, please do not spread false news. I am their relative. Her son has returned back from Dubai on February 13, 2020 and the passport has been already reported to the concerned doctor.

Also, her mother-in-law was admitted to First Neuro Hospital, Kannur, Padil on March 18, 2020 due to brain hemorrhage, who is recovering too. The doctors are still tracing out the exact reason as to how she got infected and let us all wait for the actual reason than spread false news. As knowing the actual reason will help us in preventing the virus from spreading.

14 days our Authorities declaring proudly thay there are no new cases. Then where was this case? Only after death this case has been counted. Lapses aplenty. 1. No testing of contacts of foreign returned. 2. Doctor using his private clinic for testing during lockdown. 3. Not recording every symptomatic case as suspected Covid case. 4. Hiding travel history or contact history qith traveller.

Victim's son arrived from Dubai on Mar 16. It is almost a month ago & he might have completed the compulsory 14 days Quarantine period. So, no way someone can blame authorities for negligence.

To all the people - The son returned on FEBRUARY 13TH 2020. And NOT March 16th.
    This was 2 months back.
Stop blaming him for this He has lost much already and it's too much for him to bear anymore.

If the person was really in quarantine how did he and family members come in contact with more than 30 persons?
Quarantine is derived from the word quarantena which means 40 (days) in Venitian(Venice was the medical capital of the world at that time). What was true in medivial times still holds true that is why the central government extended the period of lockdown from April 20 to May 3 exactly 40 days from the start!!

There is a saying that 'jump into action when the water reaches your seated area' is exactly what happened with Indian authorities. Early in Feb/March, people arriving from abroad were stamped on the backside of their palm and were sent from the airports advising to 'self quarantine'. People too took it lightly - they did not know what actually 'self quarantine' is. They went about their routine. Both, people as well as the authorities jumped about, only when +ve cases started cropping up. Honestly, the labourers who went walking home after lock-down started are much better - they lived on trees in order to maintain distance from their family members,

India would have done a lot better on controlling the virus if it was serious about it, right from Jan/Feb., not March 21.

actually you have not observed correctly.
When outbreak happened in China, china declared lockdown and they controlled it. India and some countries cut off China.
Meanwhile US, some European countries and gulf countries continued air travel with China.
    So, Iran, Italy, impacted next.
India got disease from Iran , gulf and Italy.
So, meanwhile American Nasa agency was busy in clicking satellite pictures of China and comparing pollution levels before and after lockdown.
And financial markets were discussing about Chinese economy, low oil demand from China and so on.

This is partly negligence from the family, since they have foriegn returnee in their own home.

And you have 20 ladies with the deceased woman even during lockdown?
If it is so, then where is lockdown then?

Please stop visiting friends and neighboring..
Also stop welcoming anybody to your house..

Exactly Sri anna... How careless just imagine... Awareness has given in the very beginning of the break out of corona here in news papers, in TV etc. Foreign returned are strictly kept under quarantine. But, same people were not sitting inside mingled with family members.... Even in our interior villagers are so so much aware why not our Bantwal people... Very sad indeed... Now, how many they met in the market here and there god alone knows... How to educate the people? In what way?? Simple thing can't understand whole India is under lock down? Children are not going to schools. What else they need?? 😅

@Cynthia . I am her son. I returned from Dubai on FEBRUARY 13, which is 60+ days ago. I was not asked by anyone to be in quarantine. But I was under self quarantine on my own being a responsible person. I hardly stepped out of room for 35 days.
And about market, not God but I know how many did I meet. On March 25 I went to get groceries during lockdown. Which is again 40 days after my return.
It's not Bantwal people but YOU, who should be aware of situation and truth before jumping into conclusions based on your own opinion.

M sure she visited the private doctor with complaints of fever n cough or any of the warning signs of covid 19.. he should have referred her immediately and informed the authorities... When the virus is going gaga he should have fulfilled it's responsibility... It's better to quarantine all who visited his clinic on that particular day n not only the doctor ..

It's time to think out of the box...

Here all chali jwara patients r tested in the fever clinic n not just who present in fever associated with cough or breathlessness

This private Dr. Is at fault. He should have alerted local administration. You cannot blindly check patient because you are family Dr. There are so many family physicians around us. If any symptoms like fever, caugh they should immediately inform concerned authorities.

The son came from abroad immigration authorities knew about it.Apart from quarantine PCR lab tests should have been done for all members repeatedly, at that time (here it was done only after the patient and one more member became serious) also why no observation was done? Ordinarily apart from lab tests a MRI/CT scan is a must to diagnose Corona, probably even xray chest was not done
.As I have mentioned earlier temperature guns are useless as they are meant for industrial use.As a normal individual take your own temperature at home with a clinical thermometer ,it will show 37C when you go to a store ask for the reading in the temperature gun usually it will show 34 or35 both are known as hypothermia,a person may not survive hypothermia, it is so unreliable!!
Here the authorities have to share a large part of the blame.Only if supportive treatment and treatment of coexisting ailments was given in time the person would have survived.,God willing.

Government has no choice but increase testing... That's the only solution here... Asha workers have given orders to colllect history and keep them under observation... Instead let a lab technician go along with them in a government vehicke, collect samples and test them for covid... No use crying over spilt milk... It's hi time strict vigilance is undertaken... There r lot of government vehicles to pick n drop government employees... Let them use their own vehicles and use government vehicles for this purpose... In my community area they come with complaints of fever and if called again they don't show up... And they don't even reveal anything...

Press conferences are not the need of the hour .. but mass testing in the community... PPE has to be provided to all health care providers of good quality... We sit in the fever clinic with a surgical mask... Same goes with ASHA workers...
