'All people, especially above 55 years should take coronavirus test' - State govt

Bengaluru, Apr 22 (IANS): Alarmed by the increasing number of asymptomatic cases across the state, a worried Karnataka government directed all the people, especially those above 55 years of age, to undergo Covid-19 test at the earliest to ensure they are free from it or get treated if they turn positive, an official said on Tuesday.

"As we have received more medical kits and rushed them to state-run hospitals and designated private labs across the state to conduct hundreds of coronavirus tests daily, the people, especially seniors, should take the test and know their health status. If they test positive, they should get admitted to Covid-19 state-run or designated private hospitals for treatment. If negative, they should stay home till the lockdown is lifted on May 3," the health official told IANS here.

State health department data revealed that of the 390 cases reported till Sunday, 256 were asymptomatic and 134 symptomatic, who were primary and secondary contacts of the virus patients.

Asymptomatic patients are also those who do not have overseas travel history or were in contact with Covid-19 patients, but display the symptoms at a later stage.

Though Karnataka is in the 10th position in the national Covid-19 tracker with 418 positive cases, including 128 discharged and 17 deaths till date, thousands of people remain untested across the state.

A total of 13,546 people, including 3,871 primary contacts and 9,673 secondary contacts, have been shortlisted to take the test across the state in the next 10 days.

"Results of these tests are crucial for the state in the run-up to the 19-day extended lockdown till May 3," the official noted.

According to state health commissioner A.K. Pandey, the number of Covid-19 tests has shot up four times to about 2,000 a day from 500 daily till April 15 at 17 labs across the state.

"As the tests will double with 10 more labs being set up this week and 30 more by May-end, people should volunteer to take the test in their interest and welfare though they may not have travelled abroad recently or got into contact with any positive case or infected person," pointed out the official.

In an advisory through the media and radio/television, the state government has exhorted the people, especially senior citizens, even with minor symptoms like cold, cough, fatigue, throat pain or fever to undergo the Covid-19 test so that they can get treated at an early stage.

The guidelines from the Centre stipulate that senior citizens should not only stay in the house, but also avoid visitors at home, maintain at least one-meter distance and check pulse, blood pressure and sugar level to ensure they remain healthy and active during the lockdown.

Whoever has made this decision needs to rethink!
Corona is now established as a virus that can be spread by aerosols which remain active in the air for long to infect others who pass through it in a closed environment along with direct droplet infection & spread by touch to any surface where it has dropped! Since it is also an airborne virus, it would be practically impossible to avoid coming in contact with it unless one sits in a sealed room freed of pathogens! Imagine how it could have ever reached, if it didn't spread airborne, top people like the palace in Spain, Saudi royals, Canadian PMs wife, PM Borris, Prince Charles, etc! It's a matter of debate whether asymptomatic patients transmit it or those in the early phase of symptamatology do it! But testing & quarantining asymptomatic patients who are more than 80% would be highly counterproductive as chances of such patients getting reinfected in the quarantine facility is manifold considering our highly strained medical infrastructure! See the no of quarantine hospitals, in Mumbai, becoming hotspots, after starting quarantine! Although the elderly are victims, CDC says that 40% of hospitalized patients are from the middle to middle she group! Mortality, per statistics, in low income countries is 0.4%, middle income 0.65, & rich countries 5.5%! Low mortality here could be due to a lesser virulent strain, increased immunity, or because of BCG vaccine we had compulsorily! Now, it's known it can spread through eyes & even faeces & that it can affect the brain, heart, liver, kidneys etc.! In the absence of any medication, only life supporting measures to trigger the immune system can be done along with treatment for any secondary bacterial infections!!
Test lots r not dependable at all!!
The best way to keep it at bay is follow given protocol, get rid of phobia, follow a healthy diet to spruce up your immune system, which is the only best way to defeat it till a vaccine arrives!
The above is my personal opinion!

This is just to see that the test kits are used and someone gets to make some money. Major problem for them is if lakhs of tests kits are unutilised and the disease subsides. Seniors ahould not go for testing as that is where they may be infected. Plus if they are put in quarantine centres becuase of suspicion chances of getting infected are higher than at home.

Let us maintain social distancing and lockdown to the maximum extent possible and slow down the disease and ultimately defeat it.

It shouldn’t be forced. The RTPCR ( Reverse Transcription Polyremase Chain Reaction Test) is for research and not used in tests. The false positives will be high as there will be antibodies present in most of the cases. Antibodies doesn’t show just Corona virus, it could be some other infections too. It’s a natural phenomenon to produce antibodies, therefore such tests shouldn’t be considered mandatory. If positive then try experimenting with dangerous drugs which may cause cardiac arrest and then blame it on corona.

Not a good idea. Test and waiting for result may trigger BP or sugar of elders. Required only in suspected areas. Mobile testing centers should be implemented.

This idea will create unnecessary panic with both the senior citizens and already over-burdened medical fraternity.

Is this really necessary? Test should be provided to only those who have symptoms of COVID-19. Hospitals and test centers are most dangerous places that one can visit. Unnecessary people shouldn't be encouraged. This is adding stress to medical staffs who are already busy in essential service. Instead, utilize this fund for test kits and other essential medical needs.

Why senior citizens, at present they are safe at their homes . If they go for tests deffinitely certain percenge of senior citizens would be infected. Most of the senior citizens could not go out for any reason even in normal days. If anybody found any symptoms like cold cough fever regardless of corona infection better that they can go for test.

Certainly a wrong move, rather infringement of rights by enacting draconian laws with ill thought out guidelines.
When the test kit itself isn't approved by FDA for their faulty results to the extent of 50 : 50 chance of getting it wrong, confining false + people to isolation wards & later in that ward if any real infected persons cross infecting them & causing more harm than help is the most likely possibility.
Hope better sense prevails in their over enthusiastic actions, might see protests defying these dictats if these senseless rules are brought in without thinking about its consequences.

Good move, as long as the test is free. Funds collected through 'PM Cares' should be dispersed to states to carry out tests and made free for common people. This is in the interest of the nation. Personally an old man rather dies than spending his meger savings on a test that might prove negative ten times.

Hon.Supreme Court has said that the tests are free only for the poor .So the middle class who have undergone the tests and those who will get the tests done in future (ideally 3 tests have to be done) will get a bill as authorities already have the address of the people going for testing. One test puts you back by Rs 3500 to 4500 so be prepared to shell out 1k or more even if you have no money in your pockets and even if the tests are faulty (acc.. to ICMR).
