Over 32,000 Indians in UAE register to fly home

Abu Dhabi, May 1 (IANS): More than 32,000 Indians in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) wishing to fly home during the COVID-19 pandemic registered their details after the Indian missions in the country launched the e-registration of expats, it was reported on Friday.

"As of 5 p.m. on Thursday, we received more than 32,000 registrations," Consul General of India in Dubai Vipul told Gulf News.

The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Indian Consulate in Dubai on Wednesday night announced they were accepting the registration.

Within minutes of announcing the launch of the registration process, the site faced technical issues prompting the missions to delete the tweet about it and repost it hours later on Thursday morning.

The Consul General however, reiterated that the registration in the databank does not guarantee a seat on the initial flights that would be arranged to repatriate the most deserving categories of people.

"Workers in acute distress, medical cases, pregnant women, the elderly and the group Indians stranded in Dubai Airport," are likely to get first priority when the government resumes services for repatriation, he said.

When POKHRAN nuclear test was conducted by the 'then NDA Government' headed by our beloved late PM. Vajpayeeji, many countries imposed sanctions on India. That time it was NRIs remittances which saved India & Vajpayeeji thanked openly NRIs for the great save.
Even our PM. Modiji also thanked NRIs when he came to Dubai for saving India during that difficult time.
"Naresh;Deshbakth;Save my India" have explained very well about NRI remittances.
I pity the poor knowledge of Raju Karkala about NRI remittance.

After 1990 Gulf War, remittances to India took a serious hit and the situation became so worse that in 1991 the Indian forex reserves were enough only for meeting the import requirements of 3 weeks, forcing the then Finance Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh to take the drastic step of airlifting National gold reserves to London for pledging to IMF for bailing out the country. That is the importance of remittances by NRIs; whether they send it to whichever account, every remittance to India adds to the country’s forex pool, which is utilised for import payments and protect country from currency risks. Hence please respect the contribution of NRIs to the country. They too are Indians.

As regards, whether they would have come to India, if Gulf was not affected, it is definitely “No” and there is nothing wrong in that as it is quite natural for any living being (not restricted to human beings) to look for safer pastures, after all “Jaan Hai to Jahaan Hai”. Many settled in Mangalore and Coastal areas today are those who migrated from Goa and further North due to religious persecution by Portuguese. We can overcome this pandemic only by standing for each other at emotional level and distancing is required only at the physical level.

Expatriates should be brought back immediately and the extended lockdown period should be utilised for the same for planning their rehabilitation. Kerala (Non-Resident Kerala Association) planned it well and already 3.5 lakhs people have registered on website for return and 2.8 lakhs isolation / quarantine facilities have been arranged by the State. We should whole-heartedly welcome NRIs to our country.

Only the personal equation of our PM and diplomatic efforts would salvage the situation. In any case many Japanese and US firms are willing to shift base from China to India is what we are hearing. This might help tackle the labor crisis to some extent.

It is worrying factor for India unemployment that has peaked to 45 years high. As many small and Medium scale industries are shut after the 'Demonetisation' and lack of government policies the skilled manpower resource will be worrying factor to feed.

Apart from the unemployment, these countries in total of $120 Billion remittance to India supporting the India's Forex reserves.

It is really testing time for central government to come out of the crazy communal politics and think about nation and its citizens.

It is a testing time i agree, but optimistic that this is a temporary phase. Of course Millions will suffer in one way or the other including you and I. The extent is different for different people. Some people may also pay up with lives. God only may know till when this will last. At the end of the day am sure , things will be back to normal. Countries that are dependent of immigrant/Expat workforce including laborers , professionals will all be called back again. Highly paid are sent back , another 2 may be recruited for the same position . After some sufferings and economic meltdown , things will come back for sure.

The safe among all at this time is a farmer ( if weather permits) who toils by his own in his farm feeding his family and little bit to market.

There are over 6 million Indians residing in the middle east nations.. They send home more then $70 billion annually. Covid19 pandemic has given them a huge body blow !!! Recession has devastated every nation on Earth... with massive pay cuts n layoffs, in the oil rich kingdoms, Indians are in a dire straits, with almost NIL infrastructures, in their respective states, employment, placements are a virtual nightmare !!!!!

    Almeidaji,
Even in India people lost jobs. It dos't mean that we migrate to China.
70 billion is deposited in their personal account. Not in Govt of India's account.
You mean to say that if this 70 billion foreign exchange don't come to India, we will become bankrupt.

    Raghu Sir,

Just see Ameiddajis comment. According to him, since NRI's are sending 70 Biilion $ to India annually, Government of India should airlift them free of cost to India.
This is cannot be a criteria . They are not doing any favor by sending 70 Billion. That's what i want to convey. That's all. Instead of requesting Govt they are ordering.

    Rathan,

Is your implication 'people in India pay taxes' is that those who work abroad, don't ? Do you know they are earning in Dollars, not Rupees ? And, their earning is India's income, not theirs ? In such situation, India should pay them incentives, not they pay tax additionally.

However, their every earning in India is taxable.

    Mr. Raju,

When an Indian abroad remits his earnings, he doesn't send it directly to his account through Money Order. The currency earned, no matter in which country, comes in rather as India's income than his own. The Indian govt through its regional bank (linked to the money exchange he remitted) pays him the sum equivalent. In other words, his services are similar to India's export therefore, his remittance is India's foreign currency. Please verify it with some bankers to explain you better.

Stop belittling Overseas Indian's role towards Indian economy.

    Deshbhakth,
I pity the total ignorance of Raju in the subject matter.
He should know, how hard it is for the Indian govt. to raise USD.70 Billion annually on its own, and also the impact this huge sum makes on the Indian economy in the long run.
Poor Raju doesn't know how this huge sum benefits Indian economy in the first place.
Don't waste time arguing with such kind of people.
Regarding repatriation, I salute the Kerala govt. who has take the first and the best initiative to repatriate Keralites to India.

The frustrations and anxiety of these Indians in UAE is going beyond their means and imagination. That is why they want to fly back home. Reasons may be many but they should think twice what is in their mind and also what is in store for them once they reach India. Picture is not that rosy in India due to coronavirus which has ruined the lives of everybody in the world.
