CM Yediyurappa asks migrants to stay back in Karnataka

Bengaluru, May 2 (IANS): With further easing of lockdown norms despite its extension by 2 more weeks, Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Friday urged migrant workers to stay back, as economic activities would soon resume across the state.

"I request migrant workers to stay back in the state and cooperate with us to resume economic activities under the new guidelines from the Central government," Yediyurappa said in a statement here.

Admitting that migrant workers were the worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic, as it had stalled economic activity, the Chief Minister said the state government had advised the industry and trade bodies to protect their jobs and pay March and April wages to them in full.

"As the Covid-19 situation in India is much better than in other countries, we are resuming economic activities from May 4 as per the new guidelines," asserted Yediyurappa.

The Union Home Minister on Friday further extended the lockdown up to May 17 from May 4 after its 19-day second phase since April 15 ends on May 3. The first phase of 21-day lockdown began on March 25 and ended on April 14.

Yediyurappa's appeal came a day after state Chief Secretary T.M. Vijay Bhaskar appointed nodal officers to oversee the movement of migrant workers and students to their respective states across the country by special train and buses from Bengaluru and other cities across the state.

"The South Western Railway zone has also agreed to run special trains to ferry migrant workers, pilgrims, students, tourists and other persons, stranded since March 25, to their states after the state government screens and certifies them to be free from the virus symptoms," a state official told IANS here.

According to the state labour department, there are over 2 lakh migrant workers in Karnataka, who have been housed at hundreds of relief camps in cities and towns across the southern state, as they were stranded because trains and buses were suspended since the lockdown was enforced on March 25 and extended on April 15.

Where was Yeddy when so many thousands of migrant, and daily wage workers were let to starve since lock down?
It is the kind public, Churches, Mosques and NGOs who were doing their part to keep them alive.
Yeddy is trying to help the real estate Mafia who wants these workers on their work sites immediately so that the work will re start again, and to avoid shortages of workers and also the cost of getting them back to work.
Yeddy is shedd is shedding crocodile tears after such a silence. He has not announced any plans to grant the dignity the migrant workers deserve for their contribution to keep the Indian economy floating.
    Very smart move by Yeddy!!!!
    Jai Hind!!!

Yes. Same way, NRIs of gulf should stay there only. They should pressurize UAE government to provide them facility and food. They worked like slaves for so many years and paid tax and they are part of development there. UAE can't just ignore them.

I agree with you. NRIs got free education in India. Once they qualified, they went to other countries. They used all their knowledge there and helped those countries to develop. Now again when there is a problem in that country they will come back to India. And use free facilities provided by Indian Govt.

Those who lost their jobs are mostly labourers and short term employees. They save and bring all their money back to India and have made a major contribution to DK and Udupi economy. Besides do you know the standard of free govt facilities!

Then government should provide job opportunity here. Here job posting is not based on qualification and experience, here it is based on caste eservation and recommendations.
Moreover India gets Dollars when NRI send money to India.

It's so strange. The migrant labourers are allowed to travel to their homes now, after 40 days hunger, hardships and misery. Without a pie in hand what awaits them now is 14 days quarantine followed by hunger and misery. If they were treated well, it wasn't difficult to make them stay back. No one, including the SC gave a thought to it. Such is the plight of migrant workers.
