Mangaluru: Severed limb saved in nick of time at Father Muller Medical College

Media Release

Mangaluru, May 4: A 22-year-old young man had got his left leg severed below the level of the knee in a road traffic accident which happened during the wee hours near the Pumpwell Junction on his way back from his place of work a day before the lockdown was enforced.

He was rushed to the Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) by the brave auto drivers stationed nearby and was administered first aid immediately in the emergency room.

He then underwent a 6-hour long replantation surgery by a team of doctors of the Hand and Microsurgery Unit of Department of Orthopaedics lead by Dr Latheesh Leo along with Dr Vasudeva Reddy supported by the Anaesthesia team lead by Dr Ananth Somayaji supported by Prajna Pinto and the nursing and paramedical supporting staffs.

The 6-hour long emergency surgery was unique for the reason that reattaching an amputated leg is more complex than attaching an upper limb; due to the injury per se and the muscle necrosis which can lead to loss of life.

A dedicated and skilled team of critical care doctors and nurses had to toil hard to prevent any complications.

The whole process was successful as the patient was brought to the hospital at the earliest and the limb was preserved well. Dr Lateesh praised the auto rickshaw drivers for their mindfulness and quick response to bringing the patient to the hospital in the shortest possible time and preserving the severed limb. Fr Rudolph D’Sa administrator, FMMCH, was proud of the fact that humanity and compassion were shown to the victim and confided in the skills of his doctors, nurses and staff.

Dr Uday Kumar medical superintendent thanked the team for the successful surgery. The patient had an uneventful recovery and is getting rehabilitated. He has undergone limb lengthening procedure a week ago which has also shown great success and he is to be discharged in a day or two.

The director FMCI, Fr Richard A Coelho, wished a fruitful life ahead to the youth and prayed that the Father Muller Hospital be a light for those in need of medical care.

Congratulations to the Team and all the well wishes to the victim. Indeed it was a nightmare for us.I still remember the way I received that victim from the auto rickshaw in the early hours at around 4 am in the casualty in the first week of March. We all did our responsibility well on time but the victim was really brave and so co operative. I am glad that he is recovering I never failed to pray for him for quite a long time. He was the only son for his parents, unfortunately I was the one supposed to break this bad news to the family members who were at home I did it carefully. by the way they even didn’t realize the severity of the incident till they reached to the hospital.but they reached immediately.anyway today I am so happy for him and his family a young man can stand back in his legs today. Thank god
