Centre raises excise duty on petrol, diesel by historic levels

New Delhi, May 6 (IANS): The government has taken the opportunity provided by unusually low global oil prices to raise excise duty on petrol and diesel by a historically high margin to raise revenue that has been severely impacted by the Covid-19 related lockdown.

It raised excise duties on petrol by Rs 10 per litre and diesel by 13 per litre - that has the potential to raise the retail price of the two petroleum products between Rs 10-15 per litre depending on the taxation structure in different states.

The government has raised the additional excise duty in the form of road cess on petrol and diesel by Rs 8 per litre.

It has also raised special additional excise duty on petrol by Rs 2 per litre and diesel by Rs 5 per litre. The centre would, however, get a tax bonanza and gain in excess of Rs 1,75,000 crore for full year.

As per a notification issued by Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, the new rates are effective from May 6.

Government sources said that revenue generated from these duties shall be used for infrastructure and other developmental item of expenditure and could handy for any economic package that may be needed to fight the lockdown imposed to check Covid-19 spread

Retail sale prices of petrol and diesel will, however, not change on account of this increase in duties, sources said.

Therefore, it will have no impact on the consumer. Oil companies were building the buffer by not revising petrol and diesel prices for last over 50 days though prices were falling.

The increased excise rates on petrol and diesel is double blow for fuel customers on dates like Delhi where the state government on Tuesday also raised VAT on the two products to 30 per cent raising its retail price by Rs 1.67 per litre in case of petrol and about rs 7.1 per litre in case of diesel.

The government in March had taken Parliamentary approval to raise special additional excise duty on petrol and distal by Rs 8 per litre to Rs 18 per litre from earlier Rs 10 per litre in case of petrol and to Rs 12 per litre from the earlier Rs 4 per litre for diesel. Though duty were not raised then, it was always on cards.

Indian economy is completely collapsed and government is trying to garner money with increased taxes on Fuel and Alcohol. If these increase is temporary till the economy improves then it should be okay. People would not have been angry if government was honest enough to reduce the cost of fuel on earlier occasions (when oil prices dropped).

Again there is a fear that this government may spend this money elsewhere such as dethroning non BJP governments at states and nonsense events. People will support the honest government even if tax is increased but this government proved again and again that their priorities are not people oriented.

Modi need to concentrate on welfare of citizens specially weaker sections including daily wage workers. He should keep the other unwanted projects like buying of special aircraft, new Parliament house, bullet train in cold storage.

He need to take all the people along in fighting Corona and revival of economy. He should disband the fake WhatsApp university and start sending messages through government portal for unity irrespective of cast, creed and religion.

    Bhandarkar,
    1. With the help of paid media, I surprised how he ended up with only 90%, he should have got 100%.
    2. Can anyone can dethrone him ? absolutely not. As long as blind Bhakths like you nod their head blindly, no one can dethrone him. Also there is something called EVM, don't they exists.
    3. Corona virus fight. This is not his fight but Indians. He already failed in enforcing lock-down . That should have been done couple of weeks ago when Chidambaram and Raga was demanding the same but personal ego was so big that he did not want to listen to others.
    4. He was so busy in spending tax payers money on Trump visit, buying MLAs in various states, who cares Corona.
    5. He allowed foreigners to attend Tablighi Jamaat which started on the 08th of March. There was no quarantine for the people who came from abroad. In spite of the first corona case in India was reported on the 30 January.
    6. He did not allowed people to go back to their houses by declaring lock down overnight (do you know what is the meaning of a leader). T Jamaat people allowed to go to their house without even testing.
    7. Finally, you're talking too soon. Right now, even after 50 days of lock down, the positive cases are increasing. no other country had lock down this long and seen increase. Wait and see how he is going to manage it when it gets bad.

Instead of bashing the commentators, you should have opened your eyes to explain to the people about Chaiwala Modi's developmental works.

Chaiwala Modi has done considerable damage to the economy prior to the Corona Virus and considerable damage in dividing the communities of India.

Where is NPR, PRC and CAA.
He build a biggest statue to prove disunity among the masses in his tenure.

Govt. just needs any lame duck excuses to fleece its people,
When prices rise in international markets we get a rise too, but when it goes down no benefit is passed on to hapless consumers,
he has to bear the burden of failed economic policies of govt. & now another blow by not letting people get the benefit of lower prices internationally. If prices are lowered then it will give big economic boost to our economy with inflation falling with cascading effect on all sectors.
Better listen to what the present lot said when in opposition before preaching,
If they do it is anti national thing, If I do then it is nation building!

    2) He is not a educated person. As per his own revelations, he has washed utensils at RSS Head Quarters at Nagpur.
    3) His education certificates seems to be produced at Nagpur.
    4) Diya Jalane and Clappings will not prove your Nation-hood. It was a mockery towards our Corona Wariors. Corona Wariors needs Homa and Prayers, God only should save them.
    5) Just praising for anything what the Chaiwala Modi tells, he will not be a man of Gharka.
    6) Chaiwala Modi is not a world leader. He is limited to India because bhaktas have chosen him blindly.
    7) People have beating utensils and said Go Corona, Go Corona Go... Presently Coronoa has increased after saying Go Corona....
Lastly, Write somthing meaning ful and useful matters so that the government can take developing works for the nation.

All these politicians are cunning and Modi is proved beyond in fooling the general public. Do you want the country to be ruined because of the ego of one man? If country is ruined all of us will be affected including you. Nobody is bigger than the country. Leaders come and go and there is no dearth of leaders in the country.

Do you remember when MMS was PM how the supporters of present PM & Modi himself used to mock him? Did MMS anytime lost his composure because of this? He only told that history will remember. It did not take long time for Indians to remember him. We really miss him at this crisis.

    Dear swati,
If we support everything for what govt is doing, then we only have to die. It is the middle class and lower middle class ppl who will be greatly affected. Upper middle class and rich ppl will not be affected.
Because of covid already so much salary decrements happened in last month itself, job losses, so much businesses are in uncertain position. Then how ppl can bare the pain.
While thinking please think logically. Just don't blindly support for the govt decisions. Govt will not feed us we only have to.
See once post covid period effect, all the taxes will be increased, gst will be increased, etc..
So much amount has come to PM care fund were it is been used nobody knows. Don't blindly support our Current govt, they are the biggest fraud ppl which a common ppl never comes to know how they eat the money.
