Karnataka government hikes liquor tax by 17 per cent to support coronavirus relief

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, May 6: Karnataka government has increased the excise tax on liquor by 17 per cent similar to the increase done on MRP of liquor by Delhi and Andhra Pradesh governments.

Liquor shops all over the country have opened from Monday, May 4 as the third phase of lockdown was implemented in the country.

The special 11 per cent 'COVID19 fees' comes in addition to 6 per cent hike on excise that the state government had announced in its budget for 2020-2021 taking the total hike in taxes to 17 per cent.

As the government is facing financial crisis due to the lockdown, this further 11% increase was done to accumulate funds.

Is is the result of high sales of Liquor in Karnataka after shops opened for sale? Or is this another way of looting public in the name of Tax? Let the Govt try and answer few questions that we general public have :
    01. please give us a transparent account of all money that Govt received through PM Cares Fund
    02. Give us details of other donations that have been collected for fighting COVID.
    03. when all Govt employees TA/DA is kept at bay , kindly ensure Govt includes all CMs of all states, heads of all states, all MLAs, MLCs, all other political leaders.
    04. Make it compulsory to all Govt officials mentioned above to give their one month salary to the Govt.
    05. Every single party that has ruled us and was in power has looted us. Use that looted money now for some good cause.
    06. stop building large statues and un necessary Parliament buildings worth in crores, use that amount for fighting COVID, create medical infrastructure.
    07. What extra benefits has Govt given to our brave Doctors, Nurses all medical staff n non medical staff, our armed forces - soldiers who are braving it out for us, risking their own lives.
    08. why are our fuel rates being hiked while world wide crude oil rates have gone to lowest level possible. where has this benefit gone? to which account ?
    09. have you checked in all Govt godowns for food grains that have been stacked and are sold underhand? Only if all these food grains were used with proper planning and transparency, we had no need to beg for money.

Come on Finance Ministry and all concerned stop looting us. Elite and rich will remain rich, poor will remain poor, we the middle class, salaried will suffer from all these polices which are done without thinking.

When the crude oil price goes up in international markets immediately fuel prices are increased.but even when it drops to 20$ per barrel the fuel price doesn't come down but goes up.wow.
Already toll booths are looting the public.
Is there no other way to bring revenue to the state other than increasing liquor tax? What about crores spent to purchase MLA's?
Last 6 years people have been burdened by inflation and hyperinflation. And it continues to grow.
People stop drinking and travelling. Best way to save money.

Karnataka government hikes liquor tax by 17%. The BJP's Modi government increase the fuel prices to the historical high despite the crude oil price in negative trend.

In May 2012, when petrol prices were hiked by steepest Rs 7.54 a litre, Narendra Modi had called it a failure of UPA government. Today, petrol is the costliest in India in all of South Asia.

Massive hike in #petrol prices is a prime example of the failure of Congress-led UPA. This will put a burden of hundreds of crores on Guj-7:54 AM · May 23, 2012 (Then Chief Minister of Gujrat Narendra Modi'.

Since the inception of the PM Modi's government fuel taxes are raised more than 10 times. To date no one know the 11 lakh crores of addition revenue collected from the fuel taxes has gone.

By given the fuel prices in India, Is PM Modi calling his own government failure by his own words?

If the price of liquor goes up considerably then there is a good chance that "hooch" will be the new cottage industry . For those old enough to remember prohibition, they will tell you how people would go to bootleggers and back to distilling their own booze.

BJP's idea of good governance. Make liquor easily accessible to constituents so that they are too inebriated to focus on BJP's mismanagement of the state, then tax liquor to spend money on their vanity projects like statues.

Hope and pray that the government will further increase the excise duty by 100% !!! That is the only avenue for people to stop drinking !!! Likewise Pan masala, Gutka n cigarettes, should be heavily taxed !!! Citizens will be free from liver cirrhosis and lung cancer !!!!!

    @Almeida,
Why r u so extreme in your thinking? Adults have every right to make their life choices, as long it does not infringe on the rights of others. If a husband is an uncontrollable drunkard, the wife also has a choice to do whatever she feels is right, and to take responsibility for that choice...

All said and done it has finally come to light that ...
It is only Drunkards that support the economy during a crisis like this.
As somebody suggested call them respectfully as ' Drink Lovers ' rather than the distasteful 'Drunkards'...
What that Abhijit was telling RaGa give directly ...and all that stuff ?
These people also give " Directly" to the Government.
RaGa will be Ninety when he learns all this.
