Bengaluru, May 7: Two cases in which infections were first confirmed and then denied have surprised the concerned. The health department has said that it contemplates action against the guilty in one of these cases.
Throat swabs of a police constable of Begur station here, and another individual, had been collected at Jayanagara general hospital. The swabs were sent to NIMHANS lab for testing. The names of the constable and the individual were recorded as identical. Because of confusion of name, the reports were interchanged. The constable was admitted into COVID hospital while the other was kept in isolation. Now, it is learnt that the constable is not infected while the other person has infection.
The health department stated that the two will now be kept in the hospital separately and their throat swabs would be tested. Investigation is underway and the guilty will face action, it added.
Prima facie, the mistake does not seem to lie with the laboratory. The centre which collected the swabs, had committed mistake when forwarding the samples with the same name. As the records of the report were interchanged, this mistake would have happened, it is felt.
The constable was initially tested at the government laboratory. For the second time, he was tested at the SIV unit. The second report was negative. Director of the health department, Omprakash Patil, said that investigation has been ordered to find where the lapse happened.
Pregnant women
A pregnant woman from AICOBOO Nagar in BTM Layout here was confirmed of infection on Tuesday. However, repeat test report was negative.
The woman was under the care of Cloud Nine Hospital at Jayanagar. She was advised to get tested in a private lab. The lab report was positive. However, she was recommended to get tested in another lab as the officials strongly felt that she had no chances of infection as she had not undertaken travel and has no contact with infected people. The test at Victoria Hospital lab on Wednesday said he had no infection.
The health department officials said they are yet to pool information on this case.
