Bengaluru: Temples closed since lockdown, huge loss to state exchequer

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, May 15: Due to the restrictions placed on religious places after the coronavirus pandemic has started, the state exchequer has lost huge revenue from the temples around Karnataka.

People are worshipping God in their own homes. The offertory boxes of temples, which used to be filled with crores of rupees are totally empty now. The Muzrai department is helpless because of the ban on the worship in temples by the government.

March, April and May were the time considered to be a good season for temples. The Muzrai department has three categories of temples which it is managing. Temples in category A are the ones which rake in a collection of more than Rs 25 lac per annum. This category has 144 temples in the state. Category B temples are those which bring in a revenue of Rs 5 to 25 lac per annum. Those temples which bring less than Rs 5 lac income per annum are classified under category C.

Last year during the three summer months the temples belonging to A category had earned a revenue of Rs 113.58 crore to the Muzrai department. It was quite usual for devotees to visit temples after the completion of the examination of their children. However, this time around no one is able to come out of their houses due to the COVID-19 restrictions. This has hit the government hard when it comes to revenue.

No problem. Now people donate money to the needy. not the time to donate to God. The almighty knows rich people started neglecting fellow brothers. Now the rich realized that , helping the poor and needy will give more peace and happiness.

Remember the Rs 40 crores diamond studded crowns donated by the 'Bellary Reddy's?

When the whole India is struggling to withdraw from their own accounts this bail for jail scam Reddy spent Rs 550 crore on his daughter's wedding.

Today migrant workers are begging for food, pair of tongs, water and so on.

What is the point of generous to the God when it can't suffice need of hunger? Why are rich temples are not opening their vaults of the hungry citizen's of India?

This is the right time the Government introduces some laws regarding noise pollution by religious places of worship. The Allahabad high court has held that Azaan may be integral to Islam, not use of loudspeakers.
It is true that while clearly granting protection of the fundamental right enshrined under Article 25 of the Constitution of India, it specifies that this right is also subject to public order, morality or health and to other provisions of Part III of the Constitution.
So, money from the temples may be important but respecting the rights of individuals is more important. So, which part of our Constitution gives us the right to disturb others in the name of religion, that too during night until very early morning, by using bells, loudspeakers, horns etc.?
We need to insist that Corona or no corona, under no circumstances Bells and sound amplifying devices should be permitted to be used between 10.00 pm to 6.00 am throughout India.
By now we are used to this. Aren't we?

Before throwing one's money earned legally or illegally, kindly look around you, how many people in need have you by passed when you were driving or jogging in the park?
How many people did you reach out even in a crisis like the one we all are going through?
Does anyone need your money more than the needy society, wild life that is struggling in front of our eyes?
However, do not throw your money to any funds launched by various political leaders of India with a corrupt agenda.
No need to worry about income earned through unproductive methods which we are so used to.
High time to reach out to humanity, make use of funds productively in building the nation.
Opening up liquor has done more harm for which the nation will pay dearly during this crisis.
    Jai Hind!!!

Temples received some much needed rest.

But the Government wants them back in action soon...

...to contribute towards the Government's $5 trillion 'grand idea'.

People donate to temples --> temples to Government --> Government to Choksi-state businessmen --> some to Antigua.

Jossey Sir, karodo rupyo ki baat kahi he aapne. Here I would like to stretch on one point... People only give to religious centres and hence centres are rich. May I request the same people to just look around you where ever you go...and contribute the person who is really in need of. for ex. Giving 5/10 re extra to an auto driver....or buying vegetables from those who sit in the hot sun... In short, whoever works very hard and don't beg....god actually doesn't need money. What we give, god never touches.... Try to give by your own hand like how daiji gives... Walter sir always says in the episodes of "corona gellona" when people thank him... "it's not my money but given by donors and so I am helping you people" So thank them... Hmmm

If your faith is strong there is no need to visit a temple to offer prayers.
Moreover God doesn't need your money or gold, sadly it's used by people.
Pray at home and help needy people around you, that's the greatest prayer.
Paces of worship have clearly become commercial due to the money involved.

Thanks god, because of Covid people's are not putting money on religious places. Now days people's spending money on poor people and needy people which is good. Spending on poor people and needy like directly spending for god. If we pay to religious places in the name of God, we don't know where these money will go.

“Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act XXII” 1959 is being implemented and govt now has the control of Hindu temples..

As per this law, the Govt has every right to acquire Hindu temples and it already has control of more than 250,000 temples in Karnataka, more than 400,000 temples in Andhra and similarly lakhs of temples in other states. As per this law, all the revenues generated by the temple (including Hundi funds) will go to the Govt (not the temple priests/heads) and it is the prerogative of the Govt to decide how much of this revenue will be returned to the temples for their maintenance.

There is no such law regarding churches and mosques. This is according to my knowledge.

Thank you Santan Mascarenhas for your clarification; I had not known about the 1959 law and wonder if it is constitutionally sound as it discriminates Hindus from those belonging to christian church and Islamic masjids. In the 1959 Act situation, is government double dipping and taking money with both hands - the temple offerings are made by "tax paid" money; when the same money is appropriated by the government, whatever the proportion is, it is earning more money! May also be, if the 1959 Act passes constitutional hurdle, then the government may be bold enough to enact a similar law bringing in churches and mosques. Who can then cry religious discrimination and fundamental rights?

Mr. Mohan Prabhu, not only you, I doubt whether even 5% of us who contribute to temples in small or big amount in cash or kind, are aware of the said Act as such topics hardly become news in our country.. For all practical purposes what the said Act means is that although the country gained its independence on 15th August 1947, Temples of India are yet to attain freedom. Whether such an Act would have lasted even for a day if other places of worship were also included therein?. Why such a law was enacted is anybody’s guess. Hope the present government will set right this anomaly and dispenses justice to the masses.

Temples are income for governments.. government should invest in construction of new temples and renovation of existing temples rather than spending money on non profit buildings.

It is good if the money drawn from these temples are used to develop the same temple and the town.

Ms. Jayalalitha during her regime brought Palani Municipality under Temple Administration. See how it has developed. TTD too is looking after Tirumala.

At least few wards can be handed over to these temples which had contributed to the Government exchequer all these days.

New Temples, Mosques, Churches coming up in these wards can obtain permission from such jurisdictional temples in the future.
