Mangaluru, Feb 3: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to rename Mallikatte Park in the city after the late saxophone maestro Kadri Gopalnath. The proposal was approved during the MCC council meeting chaired by mayor Manoj Kumar.

Kadri Gopalnath, a globally renowned saxophonist and recipient of the Padma Shri award, passed away in October 2019. He was celebrated for his pioneering contributions to Carnatic music on the saxophone, earning him the title "Saxophone Chakravarthy" (Emperor of the Saxophone).

The decision to rename the park was proposed by MCC council member Shashiraj and received unanimous support from other members. The park, located in the heart of the city, is a popular recreational spot for residents.

The move aims to honour Kadri Gopalnath’s legacy and his significant contributions to Indian classical music. The MCC will soon initiate the formal process of renaming the park, including obtaining necessary approvals from the state government.

The park, once renamed, is expected to become a cultural landmark, celebrating the rich musical heritage of Mangaluru and inspiring future generations of musicians.
