Lockdown: Private buses in Karnataka to stay off roads till September?

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, May 17: Scores of people are facing issues due to lockdown. Many are stranded in different places due to lack of transport facilitiies. In a bigger jolt for such people, the private bus operators' association has decided not to take to roads for another four months, according to reports.

Private buses have been off-road for two months due to the lockdown. This has become a big burden to the owners of private buses. Hence the association of private bus owners has urged the government to waive the road tax. It has also warned of not operating the buses if the government does not yield to their demand.

Speaking on the subject, Nataraja Sharma chief secretary of private bus federation said, "Government has to give us complete tax exemption for six months. For the next six months, they have to take only half the taxes from us. Otherwise, we will not operate the buses."

The protest will cause many obstacles for daily commuters. Only if the government holds discussion with the private bus owners and succeeds in arriving at a consensual agreement, then the private buses may start operating again in the state.

Private buses are maintained in pathetic condition most of the time, choking out black smoke and polluting our city as owners try to squeeze max profit off these with no maintenance. They only think of profit and we alrrady know about safety concerns. Drivers and staff behave like hooligans, not issuing tickets, bullying 2 wheelers and happy to drive over other vehicles. Its time the humble govt buses took over.

All said and done, private buses are required in coastal Karnataka. Yes-there could be shortcomings on the part of bus operators which has to be addressed separately. Further, think logically. How can they pay Road tax when thay have not operated for months and they have to incur fixed expenses like salary, interest and other major expenses. Moreover if they are not supported, the majority of the Bank loan also becomes bad, resulting in hit on the economy.

Private buses are not always adhereing to the rules and conditions. they harass the passengers especially senior citizens. They act according to their whim and fancy. So if they abide by the present coronavirus rules their request can be considered.

The package announced by the FM is absolutely of no help to the lower and middle income class group. The businesses which were suffering the most due to lockdown such as hospitality, travel and tourism has been completely ignored by the FM. These sectors contributed so income to the government all these years and now when they are in need the most they have been ignored.
Really disappointed by the relief package announced. And also refund of taxes paid should not be considered a part of the package as the govt is bound to return it as it is the tax payers right. You can't call giving back our own money as a monetory benefit/relief.
Stop trying to fool the common citizens here.

As it is these Pvt.buses were making a killing compared to say states like
    Kerala ...
This adversity can be changed into opportunity by the KSRTC taking over.
All losses ,problems of PVT.buses therefore can be addressed in one go.
    Everything solved.
These Pvt.can sell buses to KSRTC under some scheme.

Very true. Private buses in Karnataka is the most disorganized, money making and life threatening sector. Those in coastal Karnataka are literally Yamadoots!!

If it can happen in Goa with only Kadamba ferrying general public so safely and efficiently, why not in Karnataka?

It's time to reconsider the Govt the demand of private bus operators. Private buses are life line of the poor, middle class workers and school goers. 80% depend on bus transport. Road tax is just a 'peanut" for the government while 20 L CR package announced by the FM

The owners charged 3 times the charge decided by themselves on as many as 200 days in a year all these years. They have not paid one rupee extra tax to govt. Also they obstructed Ksrtc on many routes. Now let them pay the normal tax to the govt. What is unfair in this?

This is unfortunate. The Government and the Bus Association should come to a consensus for the benefit of the people. How are people who rely on only buses supposed to travel from one place to another? If private buses are not ready to ply then KSRTC buses should take over. This virus will be with us for a while till a vaccine is found. Meanwhile we have to take necessary precautions.

Without the transcation money from gulf or other foreigb countries, indian economy should be wrse than imaginary.
India is getting trillions and trillions of rupees every year from Indians wrking abroad, which is a huge benefit for economy growth

Yes we get billions n trillions from people working in the gulf. But they are not doing any favour, they obviously don’t want to keep the money in the gulf , besides they are not going to get citizenship there too. So the best alternative or only alternative is to send to India. So it works both ways not just helpful to India.

With all the troubles these bus owners are facing, or the commuters suffering, telling frankly, its a pure joy to drive on city roads during this lock-down. No overtaking, no unexpected stopping in the middle of the road, no Ponnn Ponnn horn that break your eardrum.

The roads are absolutely peaceful except for a few trucks. Believe me !

These private busses were driving on roads like maniacs, giving free ticket highway to hell for many.. Its stopped till September, its better it would stop till December or forever. These bus drivers are arrogant with no road sense. They just overyake from left and then slowdown in front of car to show their low self esteem.
