Mangalorean Widow Gang-Raped

Mangalorean Widow Gang-Raped

Manjunath L Hanji/Midday

Bangalore, Jan 18: A Resident of Shivaji Nagar has been arrested for allegedly gang-raping and cheating a 33-year old widow, who claims she was confined to a room in a city hotel and forced to have sex 10 times a day for three days with the arrested man and others.

The accused - Kalam

Three accused in the case are absconding. The Upparpet police identified the arrested man as Kalam, a private manpower agent.

Brought to city

The victim, Pramila (name changed to protect identity), was brought to Bangalore from a rural part of Mangalore by Kalam on October 13 under the pretext of arranging a maid's job for her in Saudi Arabia.

Kalam, along with his friends Shafi and Ismail, allegedly gang-raped her for three days at the Hindustan Lodge near the Majestic theatre.

The Hindustan Lodge where the victim says she was confined for three days by the accused.

"They would have sex with me 10 times a day," she told MiD DAY. Pramila said she resisted initially, but later surrendered to them after they assured her of a well-paying job to support her son.

After three days, Kalam sent her back to Mangalore, promising to call her when he had procured the travel documents for Saudi. Pramila returned to her relatives but did not mention her ordeal.

Taken to Lucknow

A week later, Kalam sent his friend Latif to bring her back to Bangalore.

Pramila said once she was brought back to Bangalore, another associate of Kalam's, Baba, took her to Lucknow airport and took Rs 65,000 from her in exchange for some papers he said were her travel documents. Baba left her at the airport after taking the money.

Pramila said the airport authorities sent her away after they found the documents were fake.

"I had no money, and had to sell my nose-stud to buy a ticket home," Pramila told MiD-DAY over the phone.

When she finally narrated her ordeal to her relatives, they prompted her to file a complaint with the police, which she did on January 12.

Upparpet Police Sub-Inspector R Prakash, in charge of this case said, "It is very disturbing. We have already arrested one of the main accused and will catch the others soon."

Reading many of the comments of the readers, I am glad that with all its flaws, the accused will be tried under Indian criminal law and not lynched or stoned to death as appears the instincts of many respondents to the news story.

First and foremost, this person is accused and not yet found guilty. Public stoning, lynching and other gory things that have been suggested reeks of mob justice that is prevalent in other less developed societies. Before the civil liberties movement in America, blacks were regularly lynched by whites on mere suspicion of having committed a crime. Our system of justice is not perfect, but it is all we have got that distinguishes us from the system of "instant justice" in not so civilized societies.

We may be a poor country, but our system of law, social justice and culture makes us rich as a country in other ways. If we lost that, we will be not better than a Pakistan or a Yemen.

I agree with Geetha. First of all Gulf means everyone thinks it is heaven. But the luck few of them will get. I think since pramila knew these guys and again in what circumstances she trusted them and went. I totally agree that the great mistake she had committed of travelling alone.

First of all why Pramela travelled all alone with another man to Bangalore? She could not have taken any man or women from her relative? After raping her mercilessly why she again believed these monsters saying that "later surrendered to them after they assured her a well paying job to support her son", how she thought that they had changed their minds to help her ??!!... again why she went to Lukcnow all alone and gave Rs.65,000 she didn't learnt any lesson at Bangalore where she raped by 3 monsters??!!!...above all the hotel reception why they did not noticed that while check-in a man came with lady and in these 3 days why another 2 men were going to the hotel room for several times in a day!!!....

Now Pramela has lost everything and I feel pity on her, but these monsters should bring in the public place and should be beaten or tortured until their last breath. Gulf/abroad is hell for the unskilled especially for housemaids and labors, pls pls do not even think to leave your beautiful home country and fall in the hell, instead have one time food peacefully in your home country and be a boss to yourself ...when you work under someone these Arab's are sucking their ( maids & labors) blood like anything and in returns they are not paid off properly, no freedom, cant go freely to their home country, no proper food is given, more than 15 hours in a day they have to work without any rest , physically they are abused and so on the list of harassment will keep on going.

If she deserved it is our moral/social responsibility to provide support to her. Daiji, as it did in the past in many occasions could help the victim and her son thro' the web site.

Very sad. People should be aware of such things. Once the name of Gulf / visa comes, people just forget everything. They are ready to sell all their properties and even take loan to pay the amount to the agent. The actual problems starts here. once you pay (if you are lucky) you may get ur visa within a month or so. But you'll never get ur desired job once you land in gulf, never get the promised salary. Not to mention the cases of Housemaid, they will be subject to all sort of nasty things. will be made to work 16 to 18 hours a day.

You'll be forced to do the work because you have payed a hefty amount back home. No one will be there to hear your grevience. So it is better my dear Indian brothers and sisters, to work in India then to go elsewhere. Dont get cheated in the name of Visa. You can do some small business with that money. Thanks,

I was in kuwait for almost ten years and it is a fact that many are desperate to go to gulf hoping to cash on some money while the fact remians that many are raped by even the manpower agents. some told me in mangalore that many young women were even ready to wear short and tight clothes just for a snap to get selected.

They even pay to go abroad. Most agents are cheats. so ,ladies have to be careful...money is not everything. so, just pray and double check about agents. many ladies are raped abroad and even thrown from 2-3 floors but not reported...ends up as suicide in papers.

Don't trust anyone. In 1994, I was cheated by named gentleman /Hussain (native of Bajpe) as he mentioned) name gentleman. He promised to give me job in Saudi and hired a taxi to Chickmangalur from Mangalore. Booked a hotel room (near the bus stop) and collected Rs. 14,000.00 and disappeared from hotel. All this happened under the pretext of arranging a job in the Gulf. But I never reported any authories to avoid another few thousands and it is not worth the effort/cost to contact them. It was big amounts for me as I was student. I've learnt many lessons from this incident Hence, don't talk to strangers while travelling as this happened to me (any happen to anyone) while travelling. We become innocent under the pretext of word VISA. Gulf is not everything. Beware of all scammers I get daily several emails from unknown people to transfer large funds to my account. As soon I see those move them to mark them to Phishing scam. I’m everyone of has become victim or for one or the other incident we learn from there.

Now, concerned groups should not come on the roads protesting against this - since there a complaint is already in place, remaining culprits will be arrested and subsequently punished. What is needed instead is remarriage of widows and divorced women. Thus, give them another life and happiness than confining them to four walls with life time of cursing.
