Mangaluru: Vegetable traders plan to return to central market, start business from Jun 9

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 8: During the lockdown period, the district administration had succeeded in getting wholesale vegetables and fruits traders conducting business at central market here to Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) yard at Baikampady. The city corporation had sighted their plan to construct a new central market building with enough facility for parking and to maintain social distance, to coax the traders to shift their business at APMC yard at Baikampady.

These merchants want to come back to central market building and resume their business here. The city corporation officials have taken the stand that they cannot be allowed to do this, as court case on the issue is pending.

The wholesalers argue that they were shifted during the lockdown, and now all lockdown restrictions are being removed and therefore they plan to conduct business at the central market from June 9 onwards. President of Central Market Merchants Association, M Mustafa Kunhi, confirmed about the plans to shift business to the central market. He claimed that the wholesale vegetable traders were temporarily shifted to the said yard at Baikampady three months ago and so far, no facilities have been provided there. "Though we extended support and cooperation to the district administration, our gesture is not reciprocated. The court has stayed shifting of the market, which we will place before the officials and begin our business from the central market. There is no problem for the wholesale business going on outside the market," he said.

Ganesh Poojary, another businessman, complained that the entire APMC yard area turned into a slushy field after the first rain of the season. He pointed out the vegetables had been washed away. "Now the same has been shifted to APMC godown. But there too, no one can move around due to slush after rain," he claimed.

Deputy commissioner of the city corporation Dr Santhosh Kumar, said that the merchants had approached the court. He said that the high court has not issued any stay order. He said that shifting of business will tantamount to violation of court order. If business is started here, it will go against the businessmen as the fact will be placed before the court," he stated.

Putting man on the moon can wait. Get our infrastructure to a decent standard is more important. Even Africa is ahead of us in this regard. This is an eye sore every where where roads, bridges sanitation take years to complete with shoddy workmanship and beyond budget completion due to corruption.

In the public interest and safety , the stand taken by city corporation of not allowing to resume the business in Central market area is correct. Until the construction of market is complete, no court should entertain the traders.

Traders should follow the guideline of local administration and court decision. This is not Pakistan. This is a new robust India. If the new market is not in a workable situation, kindly meet the local admin and workout the solution. We won't tolerate anti social elements in DK.

I suggest, the administration can shift the market to Urva MCC new markets building which is empty from more than one year . Time being good parking Palace also.
Instead of shifting to APMC it is temporarily can shift to urva new market building. Administration must take immediate decision because within few days rainy days will start.

The administration should have made alternative arrangements first before closing Central Market. The economy was bad before lockdown it has gone into negative territory after lockdown. Those who were doing business at the place for a long time and others associated with the place indirectly are without work.A new market definitely has to be built but all stakeholders should have been taken into confidence. Development means development of people, and without development of people , a town, city or country cannot develop.

The district administration and the corporation almost ruined business for the wholesale business. Does the district administration have any transport facility for buyers to go to APMC yard. The lockdown management was mismanaged by the Government.

Arrest them and out behind bars.
They can't burden the district administration with additional responsibilities during a pandemic.

It is easy for you to say "Arrest them". Have you seen the pathetic conditions at APMC Baikampady. It will get worse in the rainy season.

If the District Administration had provided adequate facilities at the APMC then they will surely never think of moving to Central Market.
