Mangaluru: Fish prices soar beyond reach with 300 percent hike

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 8: With the lockdown relaxation coming into play in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, non-vegetarians in particular are finding that their pockets are burning. Fish price has skyrocketed to 300 percent of normal range. At the same time, there has not been a reduction in the price of chicken and mutton.

Mackerel which was priced at Rs 250 a kg about a month ago has gone up to Rs 400 now. Sardines priced at Rs 100 then now command a price of Rs 260. Prawns (white) price has soared to Rs 550 from Rs 300 while prawns (brown) are priced at 400 per kg from RS 250 earlier. Pomfret price has gone up from Rs 600 to Rs 1,000 while black pomfret is now priced at Rs 1,100 as compared to Rs 750 earlier. Silver fish price has also jumped to Rs 600 from 400.

Fish is now supplied to the coast from Goa, Andhra Pradesh and other destinations as fishing activity at Mangaluru and Malpe have almost come to a standstill. The price is soaring because of increased transportation cost and hike in demand.

Rise in price of chicken, mutton

Price of chicken and mutton which saw a steep rise during lockdown period continues to remain at that level. Chicken production is not commensurate with the demand and most of the shops do not get supply of chicken. At the same time, supply of mutton too has fallen steeply. Therefore, live chicken costs Rs 180, chicken without skin commands Rs 290 per kg while with skin the price stands at Rs 250. Mutton price hovers around Rs 850, the merchants reveal.

It is disheartening to see the prices go so high.

The reason being the grass eaters coming from outside, like from Puttur who flock to cities to buy stuff , drive up the prices and we have to suffer.

I hope the fodder prices goes up for Tomatoes, onions etc . who cares!!

By the wat , people who eat FISH are called "PESCETARIANS" and not Non- vegetarians. Just education the folks from villages like Puttur!!!

This is Atmanirbhar India. No import only export like we do our software and people. Our GDP for the next quarter will be three figures!. Please be vegan that is good, but don't raise vegetable prices as it is also getting exported to the middle east. Ban import from china or but export the locusts which we have plenty now.

Can't understand why fish from Bombay and other states is being sent to Karnataka when Karnataka has ABUNDANT fish enough to take care of the entire state. It's ridiculous that because of the demand for fish from Karnataka, other states have to forego their share. Absolutely nonsense. This was never like this before. I think the fishes may have whispered this idea in the ears of the CM of Karnataka and the high class Brahmin FM of Tamil Nadu.

This is artificial increasing of prices by few merchants. Its called satta baazi. This can be stopped if its reported to the Anti profiteering system. Ive aldready noted tgis vomplaint of artificially increasing prices. The FST squad of the special economic offence department is going to book these satta baazis shortly under the Overcharging, artificially increasing and selling crimes recorded on video and bring culprits to books. Dont worry we are wise mangaloreans. We don't fall victim to betting or artificially increasing prices of daily essentials which is a criminal offence under consumer rights act.

"I never go to that side where pomfret and other costly fish is sold. I have never tasted pomfret in my life and I cannot think of purchasing it now. I even do not dream of purchasing it in my lifetime".

Then, what may be the condition of majority of Indians today ?

If government allow to open shops for baffalo meat in various parts of DK and Udupi fish price can be controllable.

Now people has very less option to choose. Any how baffallo Meat is not Go Matha according to Indian Government thats the reason India exporting beef to whole world but not allowing to consume in india.

when i was 18 year old in 2002 i remember my mother used to send me to fish market with 20 rupee in had to bring sardines
fish and i was getting 50-60 mid size mackerel for 20 rupees and for 50 rupees 9-10 mid size mackerel fish. and now 2020 sardines cost 260 that too for one kg and 400 for mackerel. unbelievable

now in oman and bahrain sardines price is 80 indian rupees per kilo (0.400 OMR) and mackerel price is 190 indian rupees per kilo and pomfret price is 600 rupees kilo. in gulf fish is very cheap compared to mangalore and udupi. i dont know about other part of india. i never been der.

if you compare mangalore and gulf standard of living the fish must be cheap here in mangalore and udupi but it is completely opposite.

who is controlling fish price in DK??.

In Qatar, winter session Kingfish used to get 12 QR (Around 240 INR )
Summer it goes to 22 to 30 QAR (450 to 600 INR ). There is a price limit they set. If govt not going set any MRP then it is very difficult to control the price increase.

Did you get the Date or Year for accomplishing these promises ? They are still working on it. You do not have a right to ask questions. But pay the taxes for the promises made earlier.

Wait for some more months you will be showered with more promises and blessings. They are teaching us practically how to live with the hope till we die. If you loose hope you will be depressed.
