Prices of vegetables, fruits rise in Dakshina Kannada

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 11: As vegetables and fruits wholesalers stayed away from Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) yard at Baikampady, the prices of vegetables and fruits went up in the district.

The average price hike noticed was to the order of two to five rupees per kg.

The traders, who wanted to resume their business at the central market building on Tuesday, were turned away by the district administration, city corporation and the police. The traders have been complaining about lack of facilities at Baikampady, hardships associated with conducting business during monsoon months at APMC yard, and snake menace there. They have been demanding to allow them to shift the businesses back to the city.

Stock of fruits and vegetables with the retailers are depleting, and pries are going up as a result. For example, tomato price has gone up to Rs 28 from Rs 25, coccinia is priced at Rs 48 as compared to previous Rs 45, beetroot price has shot up from Rs 30 to Rs 35, cabbage price has gone up to Rs 35 from Rs 30, carrot is priced as Rs 65 as compared to Rs 60, bottle gourd price has gone up from Rs 30 to Rs 35, potato price has jumped by five rupees a kg to Rs 45, ridge gourd is priced Rs 60 as against previous Rs 55, green chilli is priced Rs 75 from the previous Rs 70, lentils now are sold at Rs 60 from Rs 55, oranges now command a price of Rs 110 from 100 while gherkin is priced at Rs 25 per kg from the previous Rs 20.

If the wholesalers continue to boycott trade for a couple of more days, the retailers are sure to increase the prices further.

The administration and MCC should through open the wholesale trade in vegetables to anybody and everybody who may not have trade licenses for at least next 4 to 6 months. Announcements should be made in Chickmagaluru, Hassan and Shimoga districts welcoming traders or agriculturist to deal in Baikampady. Give a honest try for sometime with all seriousness. Some corporate houses may be interested like More / Spar / even MCF ( they once did this business in Belur and nearby locations for customers in Bangalore, They can be assured of permanent license in a years time. This will benefit everybody, All consumers and retailers will be happy.

Our MCC and Administration is bot not in a mood to solve the problems. Instead of APMC yard now, temporarily shift the market to Urva market Complex which is vacant since more than one year. Till end of rainy season nobody is playing in that urva market Maidan, good place for parking, loading and unloading also.

A lot of supermarkets/ supermarkets are now sourcing directly from the farmers and offering very low prices to customers. So why should the farmers/ end consumers worry about the Central Market wholesalers? The dynamics of the market place are changing and these traders should accept the fact.

This is just lobbying for some sections of people. The central market must be renewed no doubt. Rs 3 hike in price seriously.? we have seen people still buying Mutton at Rs 800/kg instead of Rs 450 and fishes paying thousands of rupees in state bank. Why no concerns raised for this.? Is this because majority in this business are chamchas.

Closing central market was a wrong decision at the wrong time.If they were allowed to do business at an alternate place e.g. Urva and Alake markets at nominal rents (until Central market is reconstructed) hundreds of shop owners, labourers ,truck drivers and farmers-maybe thousands indirectly connected with Central market would not have been made jobless during this difficult period.

After making alternate arrangements,if central market was demolished and reconstruction work started during lockdown services of migrant workers displaced elsewhere could have been utilized and migrants need not have returned home, they would have got food, shelter and money right here.
If someone does not know to start something that can benefit people at least they should not have closed something that was already up and running.

As far as Farmers are getting directly benefited, we do not mind to bear a slight pinch. Probabaly it might fall down if the produce is more. If we cannot encourage farming and Agriculture, the expenses will only grow one way. Better encourage farming .

This is what Atmanirbhar bharat we wanted. Farmers were supposed to get 80-90% more on their vegetables as per the government policy .

A few days back it was chicken and mutton. Then fish and now vegetables. So our producers are getting more money for their effort. Why crib now. Let the farmers enjoy their life. Even Petrol & diesel prices are increased so there is an increase in fuel cost and operational cost.

I will be happy if the real farmer gets the benefits if he is selling directly. If the middleman is profiteering then we will be doomed as our salaries are not increasing. In fact, the salaries have reduced or become almost zero
