Mangalore, Feb 6: The Mangalore-Bangalore Railway Horata Samithi will block the Mangalore-Bangalore train, which has been extended to Kannur, for one hour on Wednesday February 17.

This move aims at attracting the attention of the union railway ministry to the problems of citizens traveling from the district to Bangalore.

After a meeting held at Kandaya Bhavana in the city on Saturday February 6,  attended by members of the Samithi and leaders of like-minded organizations,  P V Mohan informed media persons that the union railway minister for state E Ahmed has said that the extension of the Mangalore-Bangalore train will not affect passengers from the city on reserved seats, but now the situation has changed and a lot of passengers are facing problems in getting tickets and seats, so the protest against the railway ministry is the need of the hour.

“The Samithi, as well as members from supporting organizations, will block the train for one hour”, he said.

“The train will be stopped near Netravathi railway bridge and the demand is to cancel the extension and sort out the problem caused to passengers traveling to Bangalore from Mangalore railway station”, added Mohan.

What we need is one more -night- train from B'lore to run upto Karwar daily. Then, don't restrict resvn quota for Mangalore. Karwar to Mangalore can be in the same quota. Similarly, Kannur to Mangalore can be considerd as one quota. Railways call it "cluster" for quota and resvn purposes.

Atleast one Train has to be diverted upto Karwar or Goa. This will improve the connectivity to the Capital city to the entire Coastal Region. This link is very essential for the development of the Region. All should be united to get this done by the Railways. Also Mangalore should be made a separate Division and to be transfered to South-Western Railway, Hubli.

Nothing can be changed with one hour drama. Shows like this happened before, going to happen on 17th and also in the future. Even a dozen samithi's join, it is of no use. Railway Minister highly influenced in faver of keralites.

I am basicaly a keralite. but the movments made by the samithi is most welcome. this train has to extend to karwar not to kannur.let kannur people reach different way to reach mlore to catch this train.railway can rescue/help kerala passengers, but it should cut karnataka's share.let coastal enjoy the facilities of railway. but dont mix regional/language sprits on this issue .iam requesting all outsiders who staying at mangalore to support this movement.look on, lot of outsiders like keralites or other states origin are staying/living mangalore, are not listening this voice. why?. u should cut or allow to cut the tree where u r sitting.

Ultimately there is an movement started to stop the extention to kannur, thanks to railway horata samith. Lot of problem we are facing after extention of service and I am requesting the horata samith to reduce the time of journey. and reschedule the time table.

Convert the current train into a link express. Let one half proceed towards Karwar & the other half towards Kannur

In the recent Mangaloreans have become so obsessed with communal politics that we hardly have any time for developmental issues we face. One proof to prove my point, is the number of reader comments to this post. Whereas any article on communal politics (ranging from conversions, chruich attacks, Samajotsav etc) draws huge number of arguments and rebuttals!

The right way forward would certainly be to have a dialogue with the Railway Authorities to check the feasibility rather than agitate and cause inconvenience and hardship to all concerned.

The Mangalore - Bengaluru train has been a blessing in disguise for Mangaloreans as the other mode of transport though not as comfortable was severely affected by the bad roads along the ghat section. The 450 odd seats /berths I am told has now reduced to 60 which is very unfair. The railways should compromise by either starting another train or form a link express with one half coming from Kannur and the other half from Mangalore.

Both could join up to form a longer train at Mangalore junction.I do not think anyone has objection to that. 60 berths is far too less for this ever grwing city which will soon be the second largest city of Karnataka (currently third largest in terms of area). Hopefully the demand for a seperate Railway division will materialise.

A very good initiative by the Railway Horata Samithi. Though late, we have wokenup. Fully agree with Mr. Rajesh Shetty and salute to his proposals suggesting that the local dailies(evening), websites, chamber of commerce, students unions should join the agitation. At least we can do some constructive work instead of wasting our energy on comments pertaining to communal issues. Let us watch how many of our so called educated lots, especially Clergy People from Temple/Church and similar institutes come up in support of this move.

A commendable move by Railway Horata Samithi. As mentioned by Mr. Rakesh Shetty, Mangalore, other organizations and unions should come together and render support to this Samithi to protect the rights of Kannadigas instead of dividing and fighting each other.

The agitation should be to demand slashing of the travel time, possibly by introducing another train via Arsikere. Also, in view of the heavy demand for train tickets, the Railways should be pressurised to increase the frequency. If the Railways cannot cancel the extension of service upto Kannur, why can't they introduce another train starting from Yeshwanthpur at 10 or 11 pm and reaching Mangalore at 6 or 7 am so the pressure on road traffic will be reduced. It might be better to extend this train from Mangalore to Karwar so the travelling public of the entire coastal region are benefitted.

As it is travelling by buses is most expensive and irksome, due to the Charmady-Shirady Ghat section problems and the narrow roads from Kushalnagar along the Sampaje Ghat section and ongoing road works all along the route. The Railways should also be pressurised to introduce another faster day-train. It would be better if concerted efforts are made to build pressure on the Railways.
