Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 13: A cover drive executed by a girl when playing cricket in the courtyard of her house has been published by ESPNcricinfo in its Twitter page. The shot has received appreciation from cricket
lovers.

The girl who was catapulted to fame by the said shot happens to be Jyothi Poojary from Kervashe in Karkala taluk in Udupi district. She is a Mumbai resident, and had come to her native place because of Corona-induced holidays. She was playing cricket in her courtyard two days back, which was recorded on video by Ranjit Poojary. Ranjit had uploaded this video to his Facebook account. ESPNcricinfo noticed this exquisite shot and posted it in its Twitter page.

It also has titled the video, 'stepping out to the leg side and smashing it through the covers'. Besides, it has asked the viewers whether they have seen anything like this. The girl in the video has executed the cover drive just like professional players and has timed the shot to perfection.

The girl said that she likes to play cricket and that Ranjit Poojary had recorded her game and uploaded the video on Facebook. She says that she never expected this to become famous. She added that she plays cricket whenever time permits, and M S Dhoni happens to be her favourite cricketer.

A number of cricket enthusiasts have compared the girl's style of play to different famous cricketers. Over a lac have viewed the video and a large number of people have shared the video besides liking it and posting their comments.

Having involved with cricket for so many years from playing till umpiring , i have failed to understand in what way it is a cover drive. The shot which the girl played is inside out drive . In the cover drive the batsman does not move towards leg side to make room for the drive. cover drive is basically played on a delivery which is bowled on the outside of the off stump.

Its on drive , not cover drive
For cover drive , one need to cover up the position and drive the ball

Honestly! this is small instance but there are thousands of talented people you can get in rural side INDIA. Only those has got political support will get the chance and that is the reason we are far behind in OLYMPIC to get the BRONZE MEDALS ( sorry i didnt mentioned here the GOLD) In India NEPOTISM is at its best.

With shorter version of cricket with scoring important than defense, new shots got invented by many cricketers & as live cricket has helped youngsters to copy them while playing too.
I have seen some past cricketers who were impossible to bowl as they kept on changing their tactics, stance, they move in different directions forcing the bowlers to bowl to their strength & if not come up with innovative shots like scoop over their heads etc. Placing of fielders too has forced cricketers to improvise with their shot making to score fast runs in a chase or to set target.

She looks professional btw. Its un believable and brutal copy book execution at the end with full of confidence. Cover drive and square cut are the two drives always elegant to watch .
