Udupi: Cracks on NH 17 Pose Danger for Road Users

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Feb 11: The portion of the road where national highway 17 had developed cracks and suffered partial crash due to the works relating to the laying of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd pipeline at Yermal Tenka village near Padubidri, posed further danger to the road users on Wednesday February 10, after the road suddenly suffered a jerk and developed more cracks.

Sand bags had been stacked on both sides of the road where the road suffered damage, some weeks ago. The company officials had tried to control the damage to the road by using sand bags and cement on Tuesday. The national highway officials rushed to the spot to assess the situation on Wednesday, after learning about the developments.

Assistant executive engineer of the National Highway Authority of India, Umesh Kamath, who visited the spot on Wednesday, tried to allay the apprehensions by saying that the road is safe for use. He said that the cracks were expected because of the ongoing pipeline laying works, and the company concerned has been instructed not to conduct works at night. He clarified that the pipeline laying works would come to an end in a week, and the road will be repaired at the company’s cost, immediately thereafter.

Executive engineer of the department, Krishne Gowda and assistant engineer, Umesh Bhat, were present.
