Mangalore: Journalists Protest against Assault on TV Reporter

Mangalore, Feb 13: Several journalists joined together in protest in front of the police head quarters in City demanding to suspend Bajpe police station sub-inspector Pramod for allegedly detaining and assaulting Rahim Ujire, a reporter of a Kannada television channel.
The journalists held placards demanding to suspend and arrest SI Pramod. The protestors termed the incident as an attack on media and misuse of power by the police official.
The journalists demanded superintendent of police Dr A subrahmanyeshwar Rao and inspector general of police (western range) Gopal Hosur to immediately intervene in the matter and protect the constitutional right of the media.
The protest ended with the assurance by IGP Gopal Hosur that investigation will be completed within 48 hours and action will be taken, accordingly.
Mangalore: Bajpe SI Alleged of Illegally Detaining TV Reporter Rahim Ujire

Mangalore, Feb 13: Rahim, Ujire, a local reporter from a Kannada channel was allegedly assaulted, abused and lodged at the Bajpe police station for over two hours on Saturday February 13.
The said reporter from Kasturi, Kannada channel was waiting for the bus in the early morning at Bajpe-Kaikamba when sub-inspector Pramod along with his subordinates came to the spot and enquired on his identity, it is alleged. Once the reporter revealed his name, it is alleged that the SI ordered him to board the jeep and hit him after Rahim identified himself as a reporter. Moreover, he was illegally detained for over two hours at the station.
SI Pramod however ruled out that Rahim was beaten up. He said that the said reporter was detained at the station for allegedly exhibiting rude behaviour and was soon released after his identity was confirmed. Rahim was admitted to District Wenlock Hospital.
The fellow journalists are planning to hold a protest expressing solidarity with Rahim and also demanding concerned SI’s suspension. A memorandum to inspector general of police (western range) Gopal Hosur and superintendent of police A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao has been submitted by the journalists opposing the alleged assault.
