Mangalore, Feb 19: Justice S R Nayak, chairman, State Human Rights Commission, pointed out that the weak intelligence network in the state has resulted in continued attacks in the state as well as in the district.
Speaking with press persons on Thursday February 18 at the deputy commissioner’s office in the city, he accused the state government of disregarding the constitutional rights of citizens.
Justice Nayak said that every person has the constitutional right to worship or pray to a particular god or follow a religion. “But the attacks on religious places are not tolerable as they cause hurt. Religious matters are closest to the soul of a person and the attacks hurt his constitutional right”, he added.
“The state home minister termed the recent attack on a religious place as a minor incident, which shows his irresponsibility. The state home minister and chief minister need to work with commitment to our constitution which withholds the rights of citizens”, said Justice Nayak, adding that the government has failed control the groups which are at the forefront of the attacks.
“We can easily say that the intelligence network in the state has failed to find out the attack plans which continue”, he said.
When queried if he was referring to a ban on organizations like the Bajarang Dal and other Hindutva outfits, he said that a ban must be implemented against the organizations which are involved in the attacks.
Justice Nayak also stated that the media is the fourth pillar of the constitution and needs to serve society with responsibility. He told the journalists, “Do not lose your strength and do not be biased” and added that the youth and the press have the power to save the nation.
