Udupi: Youths, toll gate staff fight over small change at Sasthan, video goes viral

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB/EP)

Udupi, July 6: A video of young men fighting over small change at Sasthan toll gate on Saturday July 4 has gone viral in social media.

As per the youths, on Saturday evening, the staff at the toll gate had given four rupee coins instead of five rupees when they were on the way from Tekkatte to Petri. The same toll gate staff demanded one rupee again when the young men were returning from Petri, and the owner of the car handed over a 10 rupee note. The staff however allegedly did not return the change of nine rupees.

The staff were allegedly arrogant, and insisted that they had returned the amount and asked the men to proceed. The men who were angered by the attitude of the staff fought with them. This happened at around 7.30 pm.

The fight made them forget masks and social distance. The men pushed the toll staff in anger. There were heated arguments and a brawl ensued between the two groups.

The fight had begun in the absence of police personnel and no complaint was registered. Local people intervened and pacified the two parties and diluted the situation.

The toll gate had been closed in the past due to coronavirus. It began functioning after the lockdown was lifted.

Most of the toll gate staff are arrogant rowdys. Maybe this is the kind of people that are hired. Maybe thats one of the roles in the job description. Typical our country, unfortunately, where the public are servants of public servants

Sunil D' Souza, Mangalore, Your comments make no sense at all. I fully agree that these toll staff are making a fast buck by passenger who don't have the exact change. This fight would have not happened if the exact toll about was paid. Fast track is the best as we have in many countries which is hassle free. I like it.

If it's the tough job and he can't handle in a way he should be, then leave the job. Facing thousands of vehicles doesn't justify any arrogant behaviour. Real Jobs are always tough.

this is not small cheating... this is big cheating by Toll gate staff... 1 or 2 rupees or even 9 rupees is small amount for one vehicle... however toll gate people do this with every vehicle, so in a day it works out to handsome sum for their pockets (just think of how many vehicles must be passing in a day)...this is deliberate modus operandi of toll gate staff in Mangalore kundapur road... I have experienced when they tried to cheat me of 50 rupees.. they kept arguing that I gave 50 rupee note whereas I had given 100 rupee note to them...then I insisted on seeing in video camera in the office...the video clearly showed 100 rupee note from my hand..then they said 'confusion'/ 'mistake' etc... In Maharashtra, they try to pass off torn / highly soiled notes when they give change...

@ shaan - It is not about 1 Rupee, it is about doing the same for all everytime.
Anyone will be angry at this situation and over all the attitude the toll employees show.

This toll gate is worst always. Eventhough the signal shows Green on their board, gate keeper wont allow to go. Even if i tell him that i have fastag. This is a scam, because as soon as u come infront of the gate, amount gets debited. Later the gate keeper tells to move to the next gate because no staff is there in this gate, there also money gets debited. Be careful.

Let show your braveness in front of hard core criminals who are threat to the society. People who are working in toll gates are mostly belonged from poor famolies and are travelling from too far. People who own vehicles at least think of it at this juncture to adjust with all by helping one another instead of unwanted arguements. People in toll gate standing many hours continuously in all climates to run there family. Time is not good around..all of them are in desperate position..atleast try to cool down if unable to help any person. Dont ever show your strength in front of weak people for god sake.
