Moodbidri: Poor Mother Struggles to Support Handicapped Twins

Moodbidri: Poor Mother Struggles to Support Handicapped Twins
by Rajesh S
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SB)

Moodbidri, Feb 23: A family at Padil – Bakyar in Todar village here that needs to support twins handicapped children is suffering without any help from the government with no permanent source of income. The matriarch of the family, Ashwini Shetty has been on a struggle to fend her physically-challenged children and husband, who is bedridden after an accident left his lower limbs motionless.

Her daughter Akshita (16) has no body strength and cannot move an inch without mother’s support and is mentally-challenged as well. While son Arun has little strength in his lower and upper limbs but is mentally sound and yet he too is more or less dependent on his mother to move around. If these difficulties were not enough, Ashwini’s husband Ashok Shetty met with an accident for the second time while working in Mumbai leaving the family without a permanent income.

Ashwini used to roll beedis to supplement family income, which though she continues even to date is not enough to cover her family members’ needs. Despite the misery, she was filled with joy when her son passed class X after being sent to school on an autorickshaw expending Rs 900 a month.

Though locals had informed district in-charge minister J Krishna Palemar about the family and demanded government support no help has been offered so far. The government officers though undertook some official formalities like paperwork have limited themselves to just that and no further action has been taken. People’s representatives too have not responded to the appeals and no single officers from the government offices visited the family. However, Prakash Pandeshwar and other staff members of local Jayakirana newspaper recently provided rice sufficient for the family for three years.

The family now is expecting help from the donors, which may prove to be a silver lining in their otherwise dull life.

The interested donors can contact the family on the address :

    Dear all,
Please read the following 'word of God' from Bible. Lets all follow the same as Jesus told us:
    Mathew 25:35-36,40
“I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’
‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”
    peace be with you....

We do need to help the people in need and I am sure Lydia too will do the same. I am sure she has taken this incident as a chance to show how hurting it is when the communial riots take place and innocent people are injured. I appreciate her for taking the initiative and trying to open the eyes of people who are irresponsible and wasting their money on wrong doings instead of giving the same for a good cause.

Dear All.....On a serious note, i believe that helping the people in need, who in this case is Mrs.Ashwini Shetty, with something more than just money will be more fruitful, e.g. financing books for the boy who has just finished his class 10th, may be finance a helping-hand for the lady when she needs to bathe both the twins in the morning or clean the house..etc, get her a stitching machine with which she could actually learn and then pratice tailoring in the future to support her family....

Because i believe giving money is the easiest way of doing charity..whereas providing the needy with something which would reduce thier responsibility and support them in the future makes it more a worth-while(just like the publishers providing the family with rice supply for 3yrs- this actually reduced the family's pressure of food/survival)....i am seriously planning to get the mother a sewing machine...God Bless All !!!

From somewhere someone should come to change the whole system.. should abolish all religions and set a new religion.. called 'humanity'...may be afterwards only 'love and peace' will prevail in these society...people won't change..rootcause problem of all is nothing but only religion.. wasting there precious time in religious places rather than serving for good cause..i liked very much comment made by Mrs.Goveas, Mangalore..and Nolda, Udupi / Mumbai..in the eyes of god..ashwini already climbed in higher stature...by looking after her 'god loved childrens' from so many years.. her agony his more than people who sympathise with her.. great mother..lydia..god is dwelt in one's own mind and heart and not in churches/temples/mosques..if you know of it..you won't would have commented like these.. anyhow.. buntara sangha is good for nothing.. only for rich people...not to downtrodden..

Human has highly developed brain capable of reasoning, problem solving and communicating using a language. Genetic study suggests that the humans evolved from Homo sapiens about 500,000 years.

Religion is a set of beliefs often concerned with the supernatural  power, taught a moral code for carrying a good life. This evolved much recently than the above. The religion often changed wtihin the community when there was a change of political power (Mughals, Rajputs, Mauryas, Gangas, Colonial rulers such as Portugese, British and so on). So, if one is a Hindu or Christian or Jain or Muslim it does not meam that this family tree in the past also had the same faith. They may have belonged to other reglion. So, religion can only direct you in a good direction and you are still a human. Only ones deeds differentiate the good from the bad.

Why dig ones belief, practise, rituals and moreover the religion? It would not lead one anywhere other than to some potholes of aguments and conflicts. Look from humanity point of view and come forward for the good cause of the society.

Didn't Jesus get angry when the vendors destroyed the temple of God? Think about it all those who throw stones on Lydia. Her frustration might be coming from something just.... I partially agree with Lydia.
It is unfortunate that she had to use Ashwini's situation to justify her cause. THE END DOES NOT JUSTIFY THE MEANS. Therefore, let us forgive each other, move on and help Ashwini.

Readers please read Nolda, Udupi / Mumbai comments. She is the mother looking after her handicapped child. Readers should read her comments and it I will touch one’s heart.
Recently about 4 months back in Mangalore I attended one Lion’s function at Urwa/Mannagudda and there they had honoured few distinguished achievers. They honoured one handicapped young boy student of St. Agnes Special School. He had achieved many national medal in sports and he is the son of auto rickshaw driver and mother is housewife. This boys sister is also handicapped.
After the honour, there was dinner. The father of the handicapped boy was showing the son’s achievement to all the participants and everybody seeing the. When they came near to me with the album I gave him small amount Rs. 500/- to the father as I was not prepared. After dinner was over, when he was going out I just said in “Tulu –BARPE. This man said Eeer oriye matra kavar koreeyer.
There were many men and women from high profile families in that gathering who are Lions’s members. Those who want to help they will help the needy irrespective of what the world says

Those who condemned her I had very straight question, how many of you have decided or transferred funds to Ashwinee's account. This doesn’t mean I support Lydia's statement. She acted first and then commented. Appreicate her bold statement. If the cap suits u wear it, otherwise throw it out.

It is very pathetic to read such arguments when
one pleads for a help. where religion, caste, creed,
standard, community stands when it comes to humanity.
I am also a mother of a handicaped daughter who is in her
youth. Ask me how a mother feels if she reads all these
comments. This seemed to me 'jale pe namak chidkna'.
Does anybody is aware what this family is lacking other
than monetary help? They need first of all counselling,
the mother needs to maintain her good health to take
care of these childern and her husband. She needs a helper
who can support her in taking care of these people. She needs
a Dr. who helps to treat them or may be able to advise
different treatment, etc. Mentally retarded childern have very
high IQ. So somebody can think of helping in educating a little
if they are in a condition to grasp. They need a wheelchair at home, transport to take them to the dr.in times of necessity.
Minimum infrastructre at home to take care of these childern
such as good toilets, etc.Ashwini I very well understand your agony, Well I won't say here I pray for you, though I do. My help will reach you. I have noted your address and account no.

Lydia you are not wrong. Many people consider we christians help to non catholic as we are trying for conversion. But tyour comments like this should not come now. the need of the hour is we should not take revenge towards poor hindu brothers. We can discuss about all this later stage. But my question is where are BD and RSS members. They are bothered only about making people handicapped. So I urge the majorty community of Hindu brothers to concerntrate on this poor sister and should not support BD and RSS.Lets all help the needy people not the poor people.

When I read this article,I realised that India still lacks the the finance support to people with a disability and mental health. I work for DADHC (governemtn organisation)who work towards people with intellectual disability and mental health. The amount of finance support (disability pension), respite care, group home support people get with a disability is tremendous.

I know our Indian community is always there to help where finance is concern. Infact our community support and donations is much more than the government support people receive. I also know when it comes to donations towards a good cause like this, any community will never think of caste, creed, religion and politics.

I think government should start helping people with a disability and their families with financial help like disability pension, home care or respite care.

What good work have we as a community done ? We are told that it is all done for conversion. So far I had disagreement with this claim but after you say that our good work is written off by my comments, it got to be true that our good works IS done for conversion ! You and I are indeed products of this conversion. We must live in the guilt of being converted and be ruled upon - we have no right to live in dignity. Independence does not matter nor does constitution.

Thuka kithein zallan? In this Lenten sesaon, being a christian, this much hatred why?. I have read many good comments from you but this one not expected from you. What fault this lady's, if other people fom her community harming the churches?

Instead of giving that money to repair of churches (as you told), give that money to this lady or help poor people and you will be blessed abundantly.

What is the diiference between you and other negetive commenting person? May be through this family, your attack was on BD, SRS or any other party but what this lady may feel after reading your comment??Keep yourself in her place and think.

Muja boini, ani mukar comment karthana chinthunn kargo baye.

Really sad to c Ashwinis situation.. There is so many Christians are afraid to help Hindus because of BD/VHP/SRS. Tomorrow these people will tell Christians are converting by helping poor people.. Any way we are human beings we have to help these people.
Naveen Shetty nice comments from you. Please pass this msg (comment) to your all Hindu brothers.

Why can’t DAIJIWORLD initiate donation process like Fr. Denzil Lobo is doing for St. Aloysius College Campus in Beeri in FACEBOOK? Even it could be good if DAIJIWORLD can accept the donation thru PAYPAL on behalf of the beneficiaries.

    Lydia,
Don’t have this kind of grudge against someone like Ashwini, why to point out at Ashwini for the actions of some Hindu fanatics? God will be much happier if you send the money to Ashwini rather than to repair the broken church items. I humbly request you not throw your tantrums on someone like Ashwini, the unfortunate lady struggling to make both the ends meet.

    Naveen Shetty,

Were you in when arms and legs of statues in our church were broken ? Our young men who led silent protest were herded in lockups and not allowed to travel abroad for work ? Our women (including nuns) hit black/blue ? This all is the consequence of showing the other cheek. No further is said about what should be done when the right cheek too is hit at.

    Joyce,

I have nowhere said that Ashwini shouldn't be offered help. I have all right to decide where should my charity go. Why is it that when we try to prove our existence we are branded 'converts' and when our help is needed it is taken for granted ? Our charity institutions such as FMCH have been attacked on the basis of communal despise ? Are we still dumb/deaf ? If our actions are convert why isn't our hard earned money too ? Let those original, patriotic organizations do some charity and community service to uplift their own members ?

Sri Rama Sene and Bajaranga Dal should help these poor people. If you are human beings than right now go and help this family. But Sri Rama Sene and Bajaranga Dal are handicapping normal people with the support of ruling BJP government.Andhra Pradesh Reddy Brothers are looting Karnataka with the help of ruling BJP government.Fortunately christian community is helping this type of families.Hindu higher caste people are looting everything and using lower caste hindus for votes.

I appeal to people of Moodubidri to visit the family and see how best they can help the family by planning a permanent income source. Once they do that they can take Daijiworld assistance in getting the monetary help from the large number of kind hearted readers, who in previous occasion also have come forward to help such needy persons. Daijiworld would as usual play the pivotal role.

Sad that VHP, BD, SNS members had no time to know what you have been going through because they were busy breaking my places of worship and chasing our girls.

I wish help arrives at-least after educated members of your community read this article.
