Mangaluru, Jul 16: In the election held for the posts of the president and vice president of Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) here on Wednesday July 15, both these posts were bagged by the BJP leaders. BJP will be ruling the APMC for the next term of 20 months.

The election was held at the APMC yard, Bykampady here. Krishnaraj Hegde, a BJP supported APMC member and former president of APMC, became president by getting ten votes. Chandrahas Sanil, who was fielded by the Congress, had to be satisfied with seven votes. It was an easy win for the BJP as the recently nominated members of the APMC are BJP supporters.

Former city mayor Rajani Dugganna, who fought the election for the post of the vice president from the BJP defeated Sheena of the Congress. As a Congress supported member cast his vote for Rajani, she got 11 votes.

On Wednesday, the process of choosing candidates from the BJP was conducted under the leadership of BJP MLAs D Vedavyas Kamath and Umanath Kotian besides BJP Dakshina Kannada district president, Sudarshan Moodbidri where Krishnaraj Hegde and Rajani Dugganna's names were finalised.

Election to APMC was held in 2017. Both the BJP and the Congress had secured seven seats each. With the support of three nominated members who were from the Congress, the Congress was in charge during the first 20 months. During the coalition government too, Congress supporters were nominated as members and therefore Congress ruled the APMC again. During the month of May, three BJP supporters were nominated to the APMC, which helped the BJP to wrest power in the APMC.
