Udupi, Jul 23: Physical deformity cannot become an obstacle if the person has steely resolve. This has been exemplified by Raksha Nayak from Bommarabettu, Hiridka, Udupi, who accepted her physical challenge as a life challenge. Her achievement is unique because we see many in the society who are able-bodied but do not achieve anything great in life.

Raksha is sharp and brilliant. That is why she could score 93 per cent marks in PU science stream without any tuition classes and stood second in her college. Her parents have been extending wholehearted support for her efforts. Her father Ramesh Nayak, works for a hotel, while mother Rajashree is an Anganwadi worker. She also has a brother. Her parents find it hard to give her time. However, they always make an effort to spend time with her.

When questioned about her result expectations, she had said that she did not do very well in the preparatory but was confident of scoring over 90 per cent in the annual examination. She worked with total determination to achieve this goal. She earmarked four hours every day for studies and used to begin the study at 5 am every day. She wants to pursue engineering in computer science.

She studied in government primary school Mundaje till the seventh standard and in Karnataka Public School from eighth to PU. She also has an interest in craft and drawing. She also was an active participant in the book fair.

Raksha says that everyone treats her with love and affection, and a close friend Jyoti, has been encouraging and inspiring her right from the first standard to PUC. She also is appreciative of teachers who have looked after her well.

She used her hand in science laboratories and in SSLC scored 93.12 per cent marks.

When into her pregnancy, her mother had no inkling that the baby to be born to her would be handicapped. When Raksha was born, her mother was a little taken aback, but she became proud of her daughter as she grew. Ramesh says that after Raksha's birth, the family is going through good times. He reveals that several community organizations have helped them. "We wanted our daughter to grow into a self-reliant person. We have looked after her in that way. We have encouraged her to do whatever she wants to. We are enjoying the fruits of this policy," Nayak says.

Raksha is currently busy preparing for the common entrance test being held on July 30. She plans to bag a job in the government and serve people through that office.

"Of late, there has been a tendency for the children to slip into depression. It is sufficient if they study with concentration. There is no need to be unduly disturbed or apprehensive. As the schools have not yet reopened, the children, instead of whiling away time, should watch the online classes telecast on the television. The parents should encourage specially-abled children and instil a sense of confidence and courage in them, Raksha says.
