Mangalore : Christians had Blocked NH 13, admits Witness before Commission

Mangalore, Mar 8 (DHNS) : One of the witnesses among the Christian Memorialists admitted before the Justice B K Somasekhara Commission of Inquiry that the Christian members blocked the National Highway 13 near Kulashekhar church for two hours on September 15, 2008, in protest to the attack on the monastery adjacent to Milagres church.

Sr Shanthi Prameela, one of the witnesses, said that the Christian members blocked the highway for two hours but it is false to say that they compelled the passengers to get down from the buses and made them to walk miles together.

She was replying to the cross examination conducted by Jagadish Shenava, advocate representing Hindu Memorialists. Justice B K Somasekhara resumed a five-day hearing at Circuit House in Mangalore on Monday.

Another witness Sr Selma said somebody among the Christian members had informed the police on September 14 evening itself that they would be holding a peaceful protest on the next morning. “Even on September 15, I had personally requested Circle Inspector Ganapathy to give us protection. It is false to say that Superintendent of Police Sathish Kumar did not scold me. Some police have beaten me too,” she said. However, while replying to the cross examination by Jagadish Shenava, Sr Selma said that the Christian members had not gathered near the church to protest but to demand justice. “It is false to say that the church bell was rung continuously to enable assembling of people,” she added.

To the questions whether the church bell was rung in the evening on September 14, and whether Christian members created a fearful atmosphere in the Kulashekhar church premises both on September 14 and 15, Sr Selma said: “I don’t know”.

During the cross examination by Narayan Reddy, the advocate on behalf of the police, she said the school attached to the Kulashekhar church was not functioning on September 15, but the students had come to the school.

One more witness Sr Celine Pethra said it was Bajrang Dal members who came in bikes threw stones at the church first but not those staying inside the church.  Francis Leo, another witness stated that Bajrang Dal people posed life threat to him after he was discharged from Fr Mullers Hospital, after a treatment of seven days. J Alben Pinto and Leo Mascarenhas were also examined during the Monday’s hearing.

    Roshan,

Liberty to address me by my name is all yours - I do not need any titles.

It can't be denied that New life is a branch of Christianity, similar to Protestants, Jacobites, etc. Having taken up the beatings meant for them, we will be sufficiently awarded. As for the claim that New Life had distributed discriminatory literature, the commission received a request to produce a sample print. Let us see how much truth is there in their claim.

Meanwhile Lydia Madam, we should not show our silent support to the groups like "New Life" etc who are the cause for the bad incident. We should be fair in it by strongly discouraging their motto openly!

Mr. Roshan, Mangalore - I have lot of colleagues here in Bahrain who are Hindus. To tell you frankly they were equally furious & saddened during the church attacks as I was. Their sympathy towards Christians was very soothing and consoling. If you visit Church in Bahrain, you will notice a lot of Hindu families visit the church and pray to God (who is one for all)I am very sure only a few Hindus who do not have any knowledge about Hindu religious teachings enjoy hurting the sentiments of minority. First, study your own religion and abide the teachings then everything will be alright

    Roshan,

For communal harmony we need to co-exist Hindu-Muslim-Christians. My neighbour is a Hindu but he did not cast stones at our places of worship nor does he harbour any hostile feeling for my house existing beside his. My 'we all' precisely meant 'us all secular minded people'. Had I meant only 'Christians' by my 'we', I am in no way different from those who stoned our places of worship.

Venu- God doesn't differentiate between people or to what religion they belong to when calmities visit mankind-'cos they all are his creation-& not all the religions. Remember what happened in Gujarath-earthquake,storms,-Lathur, Andhra pradesh, sunami in Chennai, earthquake in Assam. Come out of narrow-minded comments. Your Pune area is sesimically prone to earthquake as well-take all precautions now itself.

Why is this only rasta roko being taken into account. Recently The BJP RSS and SRS had organised a Rasta Roko. And they have inconvenienced citizens . As One of my Hindu brethern told me Undu election anagane apundu. So who is to Blame. If Mr. Somashekara is charging us for this, he has to take into account other Rasta rokos and fights by the Saffron Minority Gang in Mangalore lso. One is behind bars already

Mr Thomas Valder Bahrain, you are perfectly right.Mr NAVIN ANVIL trying to do smart.RS/BD hench man can attack churches/massijids and place of interst of said communities, their photos not appearing in police vehicle and they would be not taken in to rule of land.I am not subscribing Bandh,Rasta Rocko etc but if helpless community taking attention of the govt by doing mild actions that would be fit to proscute. This is nothing but double standard of BJP govt.

If we are speaking about commission, its nothing but eyewash and time pass. By appointing like this commission,Govt want to buy time when report comes out after series of extentions, then people will forget what happened in the past.Commissioner may recomnd certain measures but the will power of the govt if maybe, influenced by those communal outfits. Thus the ATR will be sine die. This is the out come of such commissions what history tells us.

To arrest commoner minorities they have cameras, videos etc but to arrest the Hindutva terrorists the police fail to capture them in their videos and cameras. And it is a known fact that suspected innocent Muslims are quietly suffering in various jails around India where as the confirmed Hindutva accused are roaming freely. The Govt will pay heavily for such double standard.

Mr. Anil, do you mean to say that Christians, just because they are better educated and peace loving people should have shut their mouth and watch the animals entering our sacred places and destroy it ? It is because of our peace loving nature there was no blood shed in Mangalore. Would you keep quiet if your worship place is vandalized just because your religion teaches you non-violence ? Why the people who vandalized our worship place are not arrested ? Why are they not punished ? Who caused us to block the roads ? Who should be punished....the thief or the one who try to catch the thief ? It is because we are peace loving people, we have been targetted easily. Precious blood of our Lord Jesus will not go in vain. Justice will prevail...wait and see.

I think you leave to the commission for the judgement. All we want is justice to what had happened and procedures must be done accordingly. If people cannot digest on how investigations going on then i think you can just shut up. After all as citizens of india we have absolute right to religion and justice should be given whether you like it or not.

I am not supporting or attacking on any community but being honest i should confess that there was no difference in act that was done on 15th september in the name of protest! it was threatening and public nuisance in the name or religion. There is no point in saying we are better educated or peace loving people.
