Pall of gloom descends on Powai after AI Express pilot's death

Mumbai, Aug 8 (IANS): A pall of gloom descended on the Powai suburb in north-east Mumbai following the death of Capt Deepak V. Sathe, the pilot of the Air India Express flight that skidded off the runway at the "tabletop" Kozhikode airport on Friday evening, leaving at least 14 dead.

The Air India Express flight was returning from Dubai under the Vande Bharat mission.

Capt Sathe, 58, was a resident of the Jalvayu Building in Powai.

According to residents, he is survived by two sons, one of whom lives in Bengaluru while the other is in the US. They are expected to reach Kerala soon.

A former award-winning Indian Air Force officer, Capt. Sathe had a 30-year long and accident-free flying record, including around 18 years with Air India.

    Think the problem was in the landing gears.

    @Jossy,
    Well said,
    While the first attempt to land was aborted, then the best choice was to land anywhere nearby safely instead falling into the trap of "Table Top Airport" in bad weather conditions, which are being found dangerous by various aviation experts in the country.
    He did everything but chose to land using his skills, which didn't succeed this time.

    Do you think working with computers being an IT professional and flying a plane being a pilot with hundreds of passengers on it are the same thing? Don't unnecessarily give such opinions. Only the person flying the plane knew what went wrong in that situation. Have some respect for the deceased.

    Airport authorities should have refused permission to land when the conditions were so bad in a risky table top runway.

    Pilot was so experienced and we cannot doubt his capability or his decision making.

    We can only guess probably that destiny over ruled his decision making in a crucial moment.

    Rest in peace Pilot.

    Correct... Permission for landing should not have been given by Airport control authority looking into the rainy conditions around...
