Swamis in Scandals: What Keeps the Faith?

Swamis in Scandals: What Keeps the Faith?

IANS

New Delhi, Mar 25: Twenty-seven-year-old Priya, a devotee of Paramahamsa Nityananda Swami, can't believe a video footage where the Karnataka-based spiritual guru is allegedly shown in a compromising position with a Tamil actress.

"I still doubt whether it is swamiji or it is a graphic gimmick," a shocked Priya told IANS.

Nityananda Swami's is not the first reported case of a person in religious garb being caught in a scandal. Of late, a number of swamis have been in the news for the wrong reasons.

Ichchadhari Sant Swami Bhimanand Ji Maharaj was arrested for running a multi-crore rupee sex racket in Delhi involving former air hostesses. Kumar Sahai alias Swami Ji was arrested from Ghaziabad, on the outskirts of Delhi, for kidnapping a girl.

Guru Asaram Bapu is still under the police scanner for the deaths of two minor boys in his ashram-run gurukul in Ahmedabad, while several years ago Kancheepuram mutt head Jayendra Saraswathi was charged with the murder of a former employee.

Although many blame followers for not being discerning enough, more interestingly what has emerged is the unshakable faith that devotees, particularly women who seek solutions to personal problems, have in them.

Swami Shantatmananda, secretary of the Ramkrishna Mission, told IANS: "One should seek god through prayer and scriptures and not through fake godmen."

"They thrive due to thoughtless followers who have not understood the true meaning of spirituality. Ignorant, miracle-and-fortune-seeking followers are the ones who help such fake swamis prosper in our society," he said.

According to Swami H.H. Sukhabodhananda, founder of the Prasanna Trusta, "Like fake doctors and engineers, there are also fake godmen in society."

Kamini Jaiswal, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, who has fought a case against Sathya Sai Baba, blames blind followers for such incidents. "It is shocking to see that well educated people are followers of such godmen," she said.

Police say they can't act against fake swamis until they get a complaint. "It's a social issue, with proper evidence, police will do its duty and arrest fake godman. As for the public, it's high time they recognised such fraudsters," Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police spokesman, told IANS.

Sudha Sundaram, general secretary of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA), says their should checks and balances.

"The government should come up with a state-level monitoring system to check the registration of an ashram and its source of income before providing monetary support," he said.

But there are those who are angry with the names of gurus being dragged into scandals. One of them is yoga guru Ramdev, who said the recent arrests, were "a very big conspiracy".

"Some politicians and communal forces are conspiring to malign the name of Indian saints by trapping them in cases related to fake currency, rape, murder, sex scandals and drugs," he said.

Agreed Anitha Swaminathan, a member of the Theosophical Society in Chennai. "Our country has veteran sadhus and swamijis. Such fake godmen are just a bubble in the water," she said.

The arrests have not altogether made much of a dent in the mindset of people or deterred them from following a guru who would show them the light in their day to day problems. But it has helped them understand the need for the right one.

Naunidhi Kaur, a follower of Radhaswami Satsung, said: "There are numerous ashrams and satsangs that stand out for their spiritual teachings and true selfless service to mankind. A follower just needs to be more knowledgeable about the faith and not just be a blind one."

Summed up Balakrishnan, who follows the preachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti: "I am not a follower of any particular swamiji. But I have come across many sadhus who are true. With just one or two involved in such cheap incidents, we cannot condemn the whole community," he added.

Dear friends.... read some of your comments. Someone talked about cleaning oneself and then cleaning others.... for the kind information i would want to tell you that... there is no ours and yours with fake people or fake swami's.... so stop talking non sense. Fake people never belong to anyone.... And regarding someone telling about a real maulavi will never do such things..... i totally agree with him and want to tell him that a real swami too will never engage in such activities...... There are cheats and fraud everywhere. They just get there and do such activities thinking that they can get over it , and what better than to hide in the dress of a saint...??

Bulsam, very well said. This swami's made this as thier living, and first they find out the weakness of the people and encash them and play with their emotions and sentiments. They knows the person who is not spending a rupee can donate them a large sum to become a paisawala.Simple thing, this cheaters first think about money, when they achived they will think about the other evil ways to spend it in Hennu, Honnu and Mannu. May be this is the right time to change our thinking and by the way all the beautiful girls spend their time with these sadhu's and ashrama's and a normal person pretending to be a swami i don't think he can control his emotions!!!

So further, lingaradhane is not a sin in any religion.

Awareness should start from a common man/woman and general public that everyone knows the god is in everyone atma and and can reach to him without any middle man either swami, Fadri, or maulvi. In this busy world people dont have any concentration and time, with disturbed mind they dont find time to pray to god so they hire a third person to reach him and it supported by this " devaru kottaru poojari bida".

"I still doubt whether it is swamiji or it is a graphic gimmick,"

I think as long as we have people like Priya exist, so do such swamis. When the criminal himself has recently agreed in his recent interview that the person in the video was he himself & he was in deep 'Samadhi' (???), what is making this lady still doubt abt the video ...

No religion seeks personal & monitory service to reach God. It is the god-men who are running a racket of exploiting religion for all wrong reasons other than seeking God.
Shringeri Swamiji had warned that devotees need not offer anything to God except prayers instead the god-men are seeking personal services like amassing wealth and taking sexual favours in the name of God. They give a new name it that they were in trance when doing all sinful things.
Please keep in mind that there is no middle-man between the Devotee and the God.

I would rather disagree with your comments on"WHAT KEEPS THE FAITH?"
This subject relates to sexual abuse of self claimed Nityanada swami.FYI a true moulavi could not resort on terrorism. If you look@ DK/Udupi there are so many maulavis are working in the madrasa and for best of my knowldge I did not find any Moulavi indulging in terrorist activities.

For every now and then if you people bring terrorism as a excuse and for the fault of a paricular self claimed godman Nityanada for a arguement is not augur well for healty debate.

Just because ND Tiwari was caught on tape, we cannot say all freedom fighters, veteran politicians and all Congressmen are like that. Unfortunately be it politics, godmen, or any strata of society, corruption and immorality has seeped in. What we need urgently is China type population control (our exploding population is behind most of our problems - lack of education, lack of amenities and the cause of greed forcing people to do anything for even basic needs) and value-imparting education.

      Roshan R,

Pls. comment to the article which is posted here and donot deviate by giving examples. As far as bishops of Ireland are concerned for your kind information the Church and our Pope are already taking action. pls. clear the dirt from your own house first before sweeping your neighbour's house. It is difficult to change others but easy to change oneself.

Ya........ it is not the swami's, all spiritual men for the other  sections too. Like the recent incident of the bishop of ireland, the  maulvis involving in the terrorist activities. So just to look at one  particular sections of the community and to say that the faith is all  shaken is not a right thing.

And regarding the fake mens.... fake things are everywhere. From fake   money, fake stamps, fake relationship, everthing. I guess it is a  best idea to understand that all good and bad sides are part of
      everything not just religion.

Just like how a fake currency note will have the same value like a real currency note till it is found to be fake... similarly with the swami's too. So when we find the note is fake... we report it to the police or we put that in the dust bin and put it to the place it has to belong. And no more use it. Similarly with swami's , bishop's or the maulvis.
