Worst-hit Aus state records lowest Covid-19 cases since July

Melbourne, Aug 29 (IANS): Australia's Victoria state, worst-hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, has reported the lowest number of confirmed cases since July 5.

As of Saturday, the overall caseload in Australia increased to 25,547, with the emergence of 112 new infections in the last 24 hours, reports Xinhua news agency.

Of the new cases, Victoria reported 94 -- the state's first double-digit figure since July 5.

However, the nation's death toll has reached 600 as authorities in Victoria confirmed 18 new deaths on Saturday.

"Sixteen of the 18 deaths are linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities. To date, 513 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria," said a statement from the state's Department of Health and Human Services.

Victoria now accounts for about 73 per cent of the overall nationwide case tally and 85 per cent of the total deaths.
