Bengaluru: Private schools defy government's order, open premises for students

Bengaluru, Sep 22: Schools across the state were opened for consultation with students on Monday, September 21 despite the state government's decision against the centre's order to allow students' entry into schools.

In some of the schools, students had gathered in the premises to meet the teachers and hold discussions relating to academic matters. Many of the students expressed that they were unaware of the state government's decision restricting classes until the end of September.

It was noticed that many of the schools failed to maintain the social distancing norms and precautionary measures taken to prevent the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

"The state government issued an order towards the last minute and we were well prepared to hold consultations. Also, as it was late to reach out to the students to communicate about the order, some of the students had come to the school and we were also compelled to discuss with them," a principal of a private school in Bengaluru said.

However, the private school management association strongly criticized the state government's order to restrict students’ voluntary visit to schools until the end of September.

"The government has continued with its Vidyagama programme. But it is restricting kids from consulting teachers in private schools," D Shashi Kumar, general secretary of the Associated Managements of Primary and Secondary Schools in Karnataka said.

This indicated that the government's motive stood at diverting students from private schools to government schools by misleading them.

"We were well prepared to welcome students and had even spent thousands of rupees on the sanitisation of the campuses," Shashi Kumar further said.

It is better to delay the opening of schools of any kind for the safety of the students, teachers and in fact of all. This Covid-19 is still active as the number of cases are still on the rise.

If any student, teacher or their family members get infected the schools should bare full responsibility. There is no urgency to open classes since online classes are going on. Agreed there issues. But we are in a middle of pandemic. Health and Life is more important. We parents will not send our children to schools and colleges. We will not risk our children and our lives. I request the government to postpone reopening of schools till a proper medicine is available.
