Udupi, Apr14:
‘Namma Angadi’, a three-day exhibition-cum-sale of handicrafts, handloom and eco- friendly products, will be organized by the students of Manipal Institute of Communication at the Academy’s Kannada medium school in Manipal from Friday April 16 to Sunday April 18.

‘Namma Angadi’ is a collective marketting network for the young traditional craftsmen, who have been provided vocational training at Namma Bhoomi’s Regional Resource Centre at Kundapur, near here. Some of these artisans will be present at the venue, to provide the customers with a live demonstration of terracotta sculpting along with other items.

The inaugural of the event will be held at the venue of the exhibition at 10.00 am on Friday April 16. Dr Gopalakrishna Prabhu, registrar of Manipal University, will inaugurate the exhibition-cum-sale.

Dr M V Kamath, honorary director of the Manipal Institute of Communication (MIC) and prof Varadesh Hiregange, director in-charge of MIC, will be the guests of honor for the event.

This event is being organized by the students of communication management department of Manipal Institute of Communication, as part of their academic project. ‘Namma Angadi’ will be open for the public from 10.00 am to 9.00 pm on all these three days.

‘Namma Angadi’, driven with the message, ‘Shop for a Cause,’ aims at contributing to the cause of empowering the working children and educating the public about the environment concerns by following ‘no plastic policy.’

It offers promotional space for the products, produced by the artisans to showcase their products to meet the current market trends. These products are marketted by Namma Bhoomi, a residential school and regional training centre of Concerned for Working Children, an NGO based in Bangalore, who work as the ambassadors of the rights of the children.

Traditional garments, paintings, decorative items and handicrafts will be displayed at ‘Namma Angadi’. Over 200 products including cotton Kurtas for men and women, shirts, tops, skirts, Pochampalli, Mangalgiri and Kalamkari materials will be available along with stitching facilities.

Attractive decorative items, wooden cutlery, Jewellery, cane and bamboo products, Lavancha (Khas Khas grass) items, terracotta items, stationery items, baskets, trays and natural products such as Kokum, Shikakai, aloe vera soaps, as well as edible items like honey and cashews will be available at the exhibition.

‘Namma Angadi’ had been set up in 1992 to help the village-based craftsmen, who could not visualize a future for their occupations in the village markets due to lack of raw materials and dwindling demand for traditional products. This led to a large number of migrants, especially children, who moved to urban areas in search of jobs and livelihood.

The Concerned for Working Children, which has been working in the field of child labour for almost 27 years, began to assist the rural artisans and former child workers to improve and upgrade their skills, produce new products in an innovative way and help them to locate raw materials so as to meet the demands of the market.
