Land Reform Act amendment - Buying land in Dakshina Kannada becomes easy for Keralites

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Oct 3: The Land Reform Act that is implemented by the ruling BJP government of Karnataka has become a blessing in disguise for the people of Kerala.

In the border area of Dakshina Kannada and Kerala state, Keralites have been buying land for the past four decades. Now with the amended Land Reform Act it is said that Keralites have more opportunities to buy land and the purchase of land will soar as per the analysis.

Kerala gets money from NRIs because of which the land rate there has skyrocketed. Compared to Kerala the rate of land is cheaper in Dakshina Kannada district. This would contribute as the main reason for many Keralites to buy land in Dakshina Kannada.

If a person can buy 10 cents of land for a certain amount in Kerala, he can buy an acre of land in Dakshina Kannada for the same price.

Most of the land that is purchased by Keralites in the district of Dakshina Kannada is being converted into Rubber plantation, arecanut, coconut or banana growing farms.

Christians from Cochin district of Kerala have got expert skills in rubber crop and are hard workers too. They can turn even barren land into fruitful farms. In the earlier days, Keralites purchased land in Sullia. Now they have made Beltangady, Puttur, Bantwal and Kadaba as their bases according to Govind Bhat, a local resident.

Locals of Dakshina Kannada are going away from agriculture. The hold of Keralites in coming days on agricultural land of Dakshina Kannada will be stronger. Nearly 60 percent small landowners are there. When the arecanut crop was giving a yield of 350 to 400 kg, those who owned two acres of arecanut farm could earn only Rs 60,000 per year. Now as the rules of quantum of holding land is relaxed in Karnataka there is a high possibility of Keralites buying land in the district in large numbers according to advocate Ismail Nelyadi.

Rashid Vittal, a local resident says that those who buy barren lands and convert that into fertile farms will produce employment in the district.

I've lived in bordering districts between Kerala, Karnataka, andTamilnadu. I've noticed this kind of thinking from the people who live in either side of the border. The people on either side of the border complain about each other of buying off their land, migrating for job, changing the cultural landscape, etc. Nature did not draw any border line. It's we who did it.

We should not encourage this. Gradually it may become Malyali nadu. Tulu nadu should remain Tulunad. As much as possible outsiders should not be allowed. We also need to fight for Tulunad State.

@Naveen, Tulunad Rajya This will never happen as we all born in this Tulunadu. We need to encourage the culture of tulu nadu. Migrated Malayalees long back the speak to each other in Tulu even with their family members. They are really fond of this language.
Generally Most of these Migrated Malayalees they learn and they Speak the Language where they Live. They try to encourage their culture and also the culture of the Place they live.

Anyhow People will live peacefully in this society, until everyone stops using their brain.

Once upon a time, before the 1970’s malayalees were coming to work in DK as laborers At that time the ullal river netravathi bridge was not built and they have to cross the river through the boat at the kadavu wharf on the river side. Because of this they were called kadappu'. look at what they are doing now.

if you goto nellyadi, kadaba side it's like mini kerala. but u cannot differentiate them if they are kannadigas or tuluvas or malayalees. they speak malayalam only inside their house. Outside they are Kannadigas or Managloreans. Most of them migrated almost more than 50 years ago. Their younger generation knows Kannada and tulu more than Malayalam, But keeping their Kerala culture and encourage within themselves. They have nothing in Kerala, But the Language is with them to have a lineage, root whatever. Everything is Karnataka, mangalore, Kannada, Tulu.
I am one of them, and i proudly say wherever i go, I am a proud Malayalee Mangaluru Kannadiga.

Don't generalize all in a single perspective.

Agreed! Even I have observed that Keralites born and brought up outside Kerala, like Mumbai and Gulf countries, are quite different from those who have directly come from Kerala. They are quite friendly, freely mix up with others and are fluent in local languages.

A Keralite young man in a company in Saudi Arabia was all the time dreaming that he wanted to bring smile on his parents face by purchasing the tenanted land on which their house in Kerala was situated and presenting the land to his parents. When he came on vacation, he asked the landlord, his willingness to purchase the land. The landlord purposely told him double the amount of market price, but, since the young man had already had that much money, he said "okay done", He told us that he never felt as much happiness as he felt the happiness when he saw the smile on his parents' faces.

Many of the farmers of DK district have given up farming and are selling their farm lands to the land Mafia operating in the district . Hopefully some enterprising keralite farmers will buy these farmlands and convert them into productive farms .

Coastal belt, especially Dakshin Kannada district has already become the extended arm of Kerala !!! Malayalam dialect is widely spoken and is the third language after Kannada, Tulu and now Malayalam !!! Villagers grow crops, only during monsoon season... Locals prefer their children to graduate from professional institutions, the region is underdeveloped for decades, hence their children prefer to move out of their ancestral homes, sell their land for peanuts, to these marauding, waiting land sharks !!! Future is very bleak for locals, they will certainly be swamped out, from the entire region, in the coming decade !!!!

In olden days there was a trend to give barres hill land on lease to Keralites to plant rubber. Once those tree grow, no one from DK learnt to tap it but were dependent on Keralites for the task. Agree, the plantation gives income but are those trees of any help to birds or wild animals ? No.

In the long run if we don't find Keralite labour, the plantation is a waste and a burden on the land because it doesn't feed the wild animals too. Therefore, allow any crop, but do not give permission for rubber plantation. Instead grow cashew or good variety of mangoes that you can sell.

Very true.... Rubber plantations make only economic sense and have lot of environmental consequences such as change in soil character, depletion of ground water resources etc..... Inter-cropping of banana can not eliminate but reduce these problems....

Dakshin Kannada has already become the secondary home, for many from north Kerala, !!! Local residents children are educated, many with professional careers, there is NIL source of livelihood, as the entire district, has been underdeveloped despite an international airport, seaport, railway and highway networks !!!!! No efforts were made by sucessive governments, to attract any industries, especially from IT sectors !!! Hence it is very obvious, that educated youths will definitely not do sustandard jobs for a living !!!
