Bengaluru, Oct 4: The association of college lecturers and school teachers has placed a proposal before the state government urging that the syllabus should be reduced by 50%, given the shortening of the academic year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The government has already reduced the syllabus by 30% and completed the process of revision of syllabus for the current academic year. However, now the association of teachers and lecturers is demanding 50% reduction.

In the proposal that is submitted to education minister Suresh Kumar by the representatives of the association, it is mentioned that even if the classes start in the month of November, the syllabus needs to be completed by March end, and that it would be difficult to cover the remaining 70% of the syllabus. The syllabus needs to be reduced by 50%. The remaining portion can be covered in the next academic year or through bridge course, the association said.

Speaking on the subject, a senior official of public education department, said, "Even if the classes start from November 1, only five months will be available for teaching. If shift or alternate day system needs to be followed, then it would be really difficult to complete the syllabus. Hence syllabus needs to be reduced. The government has already decided to reduce the syllabus by 30%. The government will consider the proposal of the association for 50% reduction in syllabus and take suitable decision soon."
