Mangaluru, Oct 30: World Paralysis Day is observed on October 29. Awareness programmes were held on the disease on the occasion. One of four people is likely to get the disease in their lifetime. The disease comes as blood circulation stops to a part of the brain. The nerves in that part of the brain become inactive. About 1.9 million nerve cells become passive within the first 6 hours of the attack.
The symptoms of the disease:
Stuttering talk, losing control on one side of the body, losing eyesight all of a sudden and losing consciousness.
Causes: Uncontrolled smoking or drinking, diabetes, blood pressure, fat in the blood and inactive lifestyle.
Prevention of the disease:
Control blood pressure, stay away from vices, regular exercises. Move to prevent stroke is the motto of the World Stroke Organization in 2020.
Treatment:
The disease can be identified by CT/MRI scan. Injection (IV –RTPI) should be administered within four and a half hours to dilute the blood clot in the brain. There is also a procedure to dilute the clot by inserting a tube in the leg (mechanical thrombectomy).
As the disease usually comes in old age and there are beliefs that traditional treatment is effective, treatment gets delayed. Immediate treatment is essential.
