Mangalore: Overcast Skies, Localized Rains - One Dies

Mangalore, May 1: On Friday, some parts of the twin-districts received normal rains. The weather remained cloudy the entire day, which brought down temperature.

In the early morning on Friday, thunder and lightning was experienced for about an hour at Bajpe, Suratkal, Tokkottu etc. Subrahmanya, which experienced thunder, lightning and intermittent rains since 12.30 pm on Friday, received copious rains at about 6 pm, inundating roads and creating traffic bottlenecks. The water level in the rivers and wells rose because of the rain.

A person named Beeranna Gowda alias Santappa Gowda (63), a resident of Parvatamakki near Subrahmanya, was washed away in Kumaradhara River. He was removing the pumpset fitted for drawing water from the river for his farm, as good rains were received, when the water level rose suddenly, dragging him away. After a search, his body was recovered from a spot a little away. He is survived by wife and two sons. A case has been registered in Subrahmanya police station in this connection.

Five cows, three belonging to Rajeevi Poojarti and two to Baby Poojarti from Kantavar village in Karkala taluk, died after their cattesheds were struck by lightning on Friday.

Rains and cloudy weather are expected to continue till Sunday.
