Bengaluru: New Year, no spirit - Liquor shops likely to remain closed

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Dec 5: In a measure meant to restrict the spread of coronavirus infection on the New Year eve, the state government is seriously contemplating the closure of liquor shops for two days on December 31 and January 1.

It is expected that the second wave of coronavirus may grip the state for the next 48 days. Going by the happenings in the countries, the second wave is expected between 45 and 90 days. The technical advisory committee has reported that the state too may come under the influence of the second wave.

At present, the participation of guests is restricted to 100 for wedding functions, 200 for political and religious functions, and 50 in case of funerals. As crowds are expected to come together at the liquor shops, the government plans to close them down.

The government had imposed lockdown as a measure to regulate the spread of coronavirus and as a result, had suffered a loss of over Rs 4,000 crore in the form of taxes. If the shops are closed during the New Year, fresh loss will be in the order of about a thousand crore rupees.

My humble and sincere request to the government of Karnataka, is to " Suo Moto " enforce " Total Dry Days " indefinitely, on all alcoholic beverages in the state !!! The perils of drinking is catastrophic to the health, wealth n destruction of human values !!!! Agree, the state will loose enormous excise revenue, but the long time benefits, with be " Shanti " ( Bliss/Peace ) within the family....

Liquor gives temporary pleasure but when devil tempts alcohol users start losing control over drinks.
I have enjoyed and lots of fun those days in 70's and left Mangalore in 1975. Had enough share of fun and beauties through out. we live only once and need to experience lil bit that comes on our way. Now I have sobered down . Want to save my Soul !
@ Shankar I fully agree with your sensible advise.

Govt should not say this one month in advance. Now, those who hug it, will purchase and get it stocked much in advance too. Govt. Is smart. Should close down suddenly from Dec. 20, without any notice.

Why the government takes advise from fools?
Close down the pubs, bars and buffet parties on new year eve.
Allow the fine dine/family restaurants to be open with social distancing. Allow the liquor shops to sell liquor so that people drink at home. Always we can keep the laptop on and have a party with teams or zoom.
