Kadaba: Solar power fuels tiny pump to draw well water

Daijiworld Media Network - Kadaba (SP)

Kadaba, Dec 8: A youth from the taluk has successfully been running a small pump that lifts water from a well by using solar power at nominal cost. Androse P T, son of retired postman, Thomas K T and Sosamma couple from Malkodi in Noojibalthila village.

Androse was working as a technician in a solar company abroad. Because of coronavirus, he left that job and came back home. He has invented this system which can provide lasting solution in undertaking routine work for the villagers who are bothered by power supply outages frequently.

A 12 volts DC motor has been used. With the help of bulkbooster voltage controller, a 50 watt solar panel has been installed. This pump is lowered into well or pond. Necessary changes have been made to see that the pump floats in water. By using drip pipe, the water is pulled out. The pump is operated with solar power and separate system for switching on and off have been provided. The pump runs continuously from 9 am to 4 pm.

The pump lifts 180 litres of water per hour. Water can be pumped to the overhead tanks or into the tanks located on a hillock. Androse advises to stop the engine once every five hours before starting it again.

The model is like drip irrigation. It can be used to fill tanks or provide water to small scale vegetable or flower gardens and for agriculture. Water does not get wasted. This system has been employed in houses of many in the Noojibalthila area and it has succeeded in hilly terrain too.

Surprised to know that people are not aware of solar powered pumps. Entire north India solar powered pumps are popular from 0.5HP upto 10HP... Government through MNRE has subsided these pumps also..these pumps can give anywhere between 40000 to 150000 liters per day output. We Mangaloreans need to move out of our little cozy land and look what is happening in the rest of the Indian states.
