Byndoor: Kodachadri cable car to become reality in three years

Daijiworld Media Network - Byndoor (SP)

Byndoor, Dec 12: The cable car project that enables people to zoom from Kollur to the summit of Kodachadri hill in 15 minutes, will be completed in three years. The project involves an outlay of Rs 1,000 crore.

“The state cabinet has decided to set aside 100 acres of land for the project. Three spots, Halliberu, Dali, and Salageri, have been identified for going from Kollur and to get down from Kodachadri. Final decision will be taken after choosing the spots with least number of trees. The area through which the cable car passes belongs to the forest department. Its clearance has been sought now. Within a few months, work will start and in three years, this project will be a reality,” said Byndoor MLA B M Sukumar Shetty.

The actual distance between Kollur and Kodachadri by road is 32 km but the cable car distance will be 11 km. The cable car travel will be a thrilling experience with lush green surroundings. Time of travel will be less. The tourism department, when drawing the project, has taken care to see that development works do not damage the natural beauty.

At the same time, there is opposition to the cable car, as many believe that this is unscientific. The activists believe that the project will disturb the peace in the area and medicinal and sensitive bi diversity be destroyed. Kemaru Esha Vittaladasa Swamiji has said that environmentalists along with Kodachadri Ulisi Horata Samiti, Kollur Jeep organization and Paschima Ghatta Ulisi Samiti will fight against the project.

Environment problems apart, whether this project will be viable is doubtful, considering the number of tourists expected and the fare for cable car ride. Cable car maintenance is a costly affair. The height of this hill is around 4300 feet. Whereas, the mountain Titlis in Switzerland, which is more than 12,000 ft, there is cable car up to 6000 ft and rest of the journey is continued in a large round cable car going up vertically at 90 degrees. (It is shown in Hindi Film "An Evening in Paris). The fare is Swiss Franc 104 (Nealy Rs 9000). And to the Europe's tallest mountain, Jangfru, (13,500 Ft) in Switzerland, you can travel by special tracks train, the fare is Swiss Franc 230 (about rs 20000). They can afford this, since millions of people visit Swiss and are generally rich people. Since, I have travelled to these mountains, I know this.

But, I feel the Kodachadri cable car may remain a white elephant, unless a proper "Due Deligent Report" is prepared and the breakeven of cost versus revenue is minutely studied.

I hope this project gets shelved. It will be the beginning of the destruction of the Kodachadri hills.
The place will be filled with unruly tourists and loads of garbage. Nandi hills near Bangalore is an example.
If at all the project comes into being, the number of people visiting per day should be strictly controlled.

This project should be stopped immediately. Nature beauty can be enjoyed without cable car. We are taking our forests for granted. Already nature has hit back us in the last 2-3 years. No more destruction of the trees please.

Cable car will get in more lazy tourists. They will bring along with them packed meals which will be eaten until their stomachs burst. Unfortunately the stomach has to discard the rotten waste. The tourist will readily go for nature's call on this prestine summit which will be trampled upon by trekkers like us.

We used to trek abtou 15 km to reach this summit. The senery is sureal from here , when we are above the clouds and valley below , heards of animals such as Bison heards . A cable car project to this summit be a wonderful idea, the kind of scenery this mountian range has to offer. The kinds of Cable car rides in Hong Kong. However, feasiblity of this project , considering the prioriites of the Govt to allocate funds to essential projects, and how much time the Govt will need to recover this is a question to Ponder on.
