Mangalore, May 29: Athena Institute of Health Sciences in the city had organized the graduation ceremony for the second batch of  B Sc nursing and fourth batch of general nursing and midwifery(GNM) students, at the Town Hall here on Friday May 28.

Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation and senate member of  Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) Bangalore, participated as the chief guest. Sr Irene Jane D’Souza, provincial superior, Sisters of Charity, and Dr Anice George, dean, Manipal College of Nursing, were the guests of honour. R S Shettian, chairman of Athena Institute of Health Sciences, presided over the programme.

 

An attractive procession was taken out before the programme. After the invocation, welcome address was delivered by Sr Alphonse. The annual report was presented by the principal, Sr Ann Rose D’Almeida.

Certificates were thereafter, handed over to the students by the guests, followed by the administering of the solemn oath.  In his address, chief guest, Mohan Alva, revealed that he holds the nursing profession in high esteem. He wished that the nurses will continue to serve the people selflessly, and that the people in turn, will come to regard nursing as one of the noblest professions. He noted that in several countries, there are no nursing programmes at all, duly expressing happiness at the fact that a number of popular nursing programmes are being imparted in Karnataka. He asked the people to repose trust in nursing services, and requested the nursing graduates to bring laurels to their profession. “Like Mother Teresa, who earned fame through her services to the suffering people, you should become ideal sisters by giving humanity and kindness their due place,” he advised.

Athena Hospital, which was opened in the year 1997 at Falnir in the city, is a multi-speciality high-tech hospital with 200 beds. With the help of a panel of renowned consultants and sophisticated equipments, it has carved out a niche for itself in providing medical care. Quality, care, state-of-the-art equipments, commitment to excellence etc., have led the hospital on the path to fame and progress through all these years, the board of directors says. The hospital has departments like cardiology, casualty/emergency, internal medicine, laboratory medicine, neonatology, nephrology, neurology, neuro surgery, obstetrics/gynaecology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, paediatric surgery, plastic surgery, physiotherapy, pulmonary medicine, radiology imaging, urology and vascular surgery departments. It runs a college of nursing, which is affiliated to RGUHS, and where B Sc in nursing, M Sc in nursing, PCBSC and GNM diploma courses are being offered. . Managing director of the hospital, R S Shettian, says that the hospital conforms to ISO 9001-2008 systems and procedures.

Sr Dhanya proposed vote of thanks. R S Shettian presided. Asha Shettian, secretary, was present at the dais. The programme was compered by Elizabeth Mary Abraham and Veena Pramila Tauro.
