4 Days After Mangalore crash, AI Plane Plunged 5000 ft

NEW DELHI, May 31 (PTI): An airplane of Air India's low-budget carrier on a flight from Dubai to Pune with 118 persons on board plunged a few thousand feet after it hit an air pocket giving tense moments just four days after the Mangalore air crash.

No one was injured in the incident that occurred on May 26 when the Boeing 737-800 of Air India Express which was on an auto-pilot mode hit an air pocket and dived over 5,000 feet while flying over Muscat, official sources said today.

Both the pilots of the flight IX-212 have been taken off duty pending investigations, which have been launched by Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. There were 112 passengers and a six-member crew on board.

On May 22, a Boeing 737-800 had crashed in Managalore while landing after the pilot overshot the runway killing 158 persons.

There were reports that the commander of the aircraft (IX-212) was in the toilet when the airplane, after the plunge, came directly on the path of another plane.

But official sources said there was no threat of a near-miss as no other aircraft was near the Air India plane that lsot height. The enquiry would lay bare the facts, they added.

In a statement, an Air India spokesperson said the Air India Express flight "lost some height" but "not 15,000 feet as reported".

"There are no reports of any injuries to passengers and crew. The pilots have been de-rostered to enable them to participate in the enquiry. The matter is being investigated," the spokesperson said, adding that the aircraft later landed safely at Pune.

i agree with you Kiran (mang)...
i would like to inform this to the whole world that, whatever happend is not the mistake of the pilot or Airlines. if your destiny is designed such then no one can protect you.
thoughts of introducing a KingFisher Airlines from mang to dubai is good, but if the destiney of the peoples is designed to die in that, than can the KingFisher airlines Help you to survive?
then the same people request some other airlines to introduce the flight on the same route. and some say stop travelling in the ....flight b'coz its worst.
Crazy people don't just post your comments, think before you pen.

Is it better than AI economical class? Boeng or air bus who is the manufacturer of aircraft and they supply same spec to all the airline, NRI’s please get educated your self.

If you are a Mangalorean when you traveled to Bangalore or Bombay (before you became NRI) how did you traveled to Bombay or Bangalore you were not looking for cheaper ordinary bus or ordinary class in train? Did you complain Indian system that time? Please don’t grumble. All Indians live what ever part of the world they have NRI account in India and their aim is to make money and come back and settle in India. So don’t simply blame India or AI, Railways, KSRTC.. When I used to fly from Dubai to Mumbai almost every three weeks,I chose Emirates not becuase Air India's pilots were incompetent, but because of the punctuality factor. Off late, the ground staff and the cabin crew are not that friendly, still there was no issue on safety. Mangalore incident has changed everything against Air India. No doubt it is our national carrier. We may lay down our lives for the nation but not necessarily for our national carrier! I have flown into Mangalore over 100 times and firmly believe that even if the pilot had over shot the runway 2000 feet, he could have landed with lesser problems, if only there was no last minute confusion to either land or take off again.

we are used to land in Mumbai's 09-27 runway on tuesdays with part of the runway under maintenance! The other runway 14-32 also looks shorter than Mangalore's new runway 06-24.

In spite of being a frequent flier, what makes me jittery is to have a foreign pilot especially somebody from erstwhile USSR. With due respect to their ability as pilots, their communication is horrible and during an emergency it will make a difference. For this reason I avoid flying ATR 72 flights of Kingfisher between Bangalore and Mnagalore.

All said and done this is the right time for Air India to wake up, think holistically and do a major revamp if it wants to survive in the market with credibility.

WHENEVER AN AIRCRACT IS DELAYED WE ARE GET ANGRY, TRY TO BLAME EACH OTHER, CREATING A TENSED ATMOSPHRE FOR ALL - EMPLOYEE AND PASENGER WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THE FACT THAT WHY THE DELAY IS HAPPENING ? NOW IM TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE COMMENT FROM MR. John Pinto, Chickmagalur/ Qatar, WHO WROTE THAT LIFE IS SHORT..TEL ALL YOUR FELLOW COLLEAGUES AND FELLOW TRAVELLERS ,

WHENEVER A FLIGHT GETS DELAY DONT BLAME THE OPERATORS.. ALL AIRLINES OPERATORS IN THE WORLD GIVE FIRST PRIORITY FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY....NO COMPROMISE ON THESE.. WHENEVER WE PEPLE PASS THRU THE SECURITY SCREENING AND BODY SEARCH WE ALL MAKE BIG FUSS. TRY TO STOP ALL THESE FUSS. I HAVE SEEN A BIG DRAMA WHEN SPICEJET FROM MUMBAI TO DELHI WAS DELAYED DUE TO TECHINCAL. PEOPLE WANT TO GO ON THE SAME A/C AND FEW HIGH FREQUENCY VOICED LADY SHOUDING/SCREAMING AND SCOLDING THE POOR COUNTER SUPERVISOR.

I agree with Mr. Prakash shetty on few points like some times things happen beyond our control. I also agree that Bajpe Airport was almost safe for the last 60 years except a Dacota flyght slipped from run way and stuck between two rocks in the eastern side of old runway 1978, In which our Mr. Veerappa moily the finanace minister of our state travelling, few of them had minor injuries. The Air pockets are very common on Muscat sky during hot summer even we experienced while flyieng at a height of 14000 feet with small aircrafts. I feel Air India pilots would have been come across this situations in the past 4 years of operations in this sector. We need other Aircrafts to operate in this sector to break the monopoly of AIE. As many of the readers quoted they are only for name sake low cost carrier the rate of jet via Mumbai is equal to AIE direct rate from Muscat. I request Mangaloreans and other citizens of soruonding areas who works in the Gulf to advocate for pvt. Aircrafts to operate in this sector. Mangalore sector should be open to all other Airlines, Need of this hour. The aviation ministry should impliment all safety measures and the remidial actions advised by investigation team of this Air crash on shortest time frame to avoid any future disasters.

Air India Express has become now, Air India Expensive as you see the fares are either par with others or more. No wonder they are making profits now. The fare from Kuwait to Mangalore is more(say KD25 - one way) than the fare from Kuwait to Kozhikode(Calicut). Very strange. What's the reason ? quota problem or mallu power ? I suspect Air India doesn't know that both Airports are in India and the distance to Calicut is more than Mangalore.

We all love INDIA and we are proud to be INDIAN but that dosent make any sense in your comments.if you go back to the real story of the flight then you will come to know better. There was fight between the crew members and the pilot which one of the crew members got injuerd.for the purpose of fight the flight was running in auto pilot mode.I agree the AI did not say anybody to work abroad but AI says that you are in the safe hands when you fly to meet your loved ones. its not the matter of money but the lifes, each pilot has the reponsibility to take the passengers safely to their destination. If something happens accidently then we can forget but if something happens by irresponsibilty from the reponsible person then its not an accident.even same thing happend in mangalore as you know co-pilot had warned pilot not land yet the pilot was senior he did not hear what the co-pilot said and the lifes of 158 innocents taken away.As i know the AI flights which travels to middle east are the old ones and lots of complaints has been filed. so i wanna say that what is wrong is wrong.

    Dear Commenter’s,

AI did not ask us to work abroad, annually there is a medium that brings us back to our home Country/Town. People do not care what they pay when they fly “Emirates”, “Etihad” “,“Cathay”, “KLM”, “Virgin”…& feel ashamed to say I FLY AI/IA…& still want to quietly fly in AI/IA???? Further give dirty comments against it??? Like vomit into your own plates.

Sad but true all those commented against our own Air Line “Shame on you Folks”. The air pocket is “natural” any air craft in this fling path would experience the same. Pilot can go to the rest room as he flies the aircraft from the cockpit & a Human too.

Yes AI/IA brand is not seen on the cricketers/Golfers/Tennis Players/F1 etc but let’s remember has a phenomenal safety records against its flings hours infact at par with most of the International Air carrier Brands like the few I mentioned above.

Accident is accidental & called as accident!!!!!…We love India.

But still passengers from Mangalore and northen part of Kerala travell in this just because of only ond only one adavntage that is , this is the only direct plane which will save time from travelling via Mumbai or Bangalore.nothing else.

Yes I have not yet recovered from the shock of mangalore air crash even if there were no direct relatives of mine.still i can feel the feelings of the relatives of the victims.
but we can console ourself that its was written in destiny by god and it happened.its was pilots error but even though the co-pilot warned not to land the commandor having 10000 hrs flying experience lost his mind and judgement for the fraction of moment and everything finished.may be god made his mind blank to happen this incident.
Dubai-Pune flight plunged few thousand feet after it hit airpocket its not in anybodys control.its natures play.then why we should blame the aircraft.if the aircraft is of poor quality then how could it maintained the balance without falling to ground and how could it safe landed in pune if the pilots are inefficient.this is not only in the case of airindia express flight this happened to Emirates airlines as well last month which was going to kerala plunged 15000 feet near goa.does it mean the poor quality of emirates aircraft.
the mangalore airport started 60 years ago and till last month nothing happened by gods grace.and international flight started 4 years back .same airline was operating all these years they have taken proper care in every respect regarding quality of flight and the efficiency of pilots and as a result we didnt had any unfortunate incidents.i am not supporting anything but i just wanted to say that its gods wish and natures play not AI mistake.

It seems that air india is making up for all their losses in other sectors by fleecing us mangaloreans.low budget for other sectors maybe, even those who have longer flying hours than us.we mangaloreans have to do with tepid food, congested seats, sometimes no a/c and high charges to top it all.ive been flying to mlore from last21 years, first through mumbai and then to mlore now directly.the only consolation is that ground staff at the airport are good and we can come out without any harassment.i hope air india is listening to our woes and at least make the journey worthwhile and bearable by reducing prices in the mangalore sector.

Every trip, we travelled with some kind of fear in this airlines whereas, via Mumbai was not so. This airlines had d profit from M'lore sector within a short span of its launch after recovering all its previous loss. Still, why the govt targeting profit, putting Mangalorean passenger's life at risk ? Why we are not previlaged to fly with the airlines of our choice ? After all we pay and fly
