Somanna, 7 Others File Nominations for Council Polls

Bangalore, May 31: Former minister-turned BJP leader V Somanna and seven others filed their nomination papers for the seven seats from Karnataka legislative council from the state assembly going to polls on June 5 filed their nomination papers on Monday.

The other sevem  candidates to enter the fray are:  former BJP lok sabha member C H Vijayashankar, Narayaana Sa Bandsa and Ashwathanarayana Gowda (all of BJP), former MLA Suryanarayana Reddy and M Srinivas (both JD(S) and outgoing chairman of the Karnataka legislative council Veeranna Mathikatti and R V Venkatesh (both of Congress).

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, BJP national general secteary H N Anant Kumar and state BJP president K S Eshwarappa and several other ministers accompanied the ruling party candidates as if to signify the importance of the victory of all the four BJP candidates.

On the Congress side, the party candidates were accompanied by KPCC president  R V Deshpande and opposition leaders of both houses of state legislature Siddaramaiah and Motamma, while JD(S) candidates were accompanied by senior leader and MLC M C Nanaiah and former Minister P G R Sindhia.

The last date for withdrawal is June 3.

It remains to be seen whether the Congress and JD(S) will go ahead with their previous decision to have a seat sharing adjustment with the Congress party allowing two candidates from JD(S) to get elected in return for the support of JD(S) for its two candidates in Rajya Sabha elections. The JD(S) and Congress can win a seat each while BJP is assured of bagging all the four seats it is contesting. The JD(S) can win the second seat only if the Congress party agrees to part with its surplus votes
